The Quest 2 still has quite a bit of life to it - it won't get the high-res textures in newer games, but Meta unlocked something like 30% extra power in the headset a while back, there's a huge backlog of quality games and even the newer games run on it (there might be a couple quest-3-exclusive games on it)
Much of the Quest3 benefit is going to be in the better lenses, the extra power (higher quality visuals) and the color passthrough, and I love all of these -- but the Quest 2 can still run games great.
I'd say the controllers on the Quest 2 might even track better than the Quest 3.
A couple quick notes/suggestions:
Use a referral code when activating your Quest, you'll get a bonus $30 store credit.
Whenever buying a game from the store, use a referral code and you'll save 25% instantly. Both of these are easy to find.
Buy the "Quest Games Optimizer" (3rd party tool) which will let you adjust the quality of games, like resolution and power. Many of them are not optimized and can look considerably better with this add-on

Also there's a similar system with games themselves - game owners can generate a 25% discount link for basically anything they buy. They get a $5 credit when someone buys it.

can you give us an example of the top of your head? Game/setting changed
I've been using the quest 3 with it lately, so I haven't tried much with the quest 2 and it over the last 5-6 months, but almost every game would noticeably be improved. Even recent ones like Resident Evil 4.
A lot of older titles were built to take advantage of the quest 1 and 2, and never got.optimized after meta unlocked additional processing power on the headset, so using these customizations let you up the resolution, framerate and texture quality quite a bit.
I would say almost every game I tried it with, on quest 3 and 2, made a notable difference if you're doing A/B comparison, and I could notice the downgrade if I played a game without it turned on
The biggest benefit to the 3 are that it will have a longer lifespan. Expect it to last about 2 years past the Quest 2's end of life, which isn't here yet. The Quest 2 will continue to have compatible games and has a huge backlog.
The other benefits to the 3 are going to be Mixed Reality gaming (which has definitely been a "thing" with the release of the Q3, but never really was with the Quest 2). How important is that, and will that be to you? That would probably help decide which to buy.
The better lenses are definitely nice, and the existing games will generally look better on Quest 3 (especially newer ones).
Side-by-side, if the Quest 2 was $150/200, the Quest 3 should probably be around $350. It's a steep jump to go from that entry level price to $500 for these benefits.
With that said, if you just want the best, the Quest 3 is a no brainer. You'll probably upgrade to one at some point, so why buy old tech when the new stuff is out? If you can afford the 3, it is the one to get.. the 2 is just there for if you're having difficulty justifying that cost.
If you do want the Quest 2 though, it's an easy at this price. You get a $50 gift card and can get a $30 store credit for a referral code, so you're basically looking at $120 (assuming you use both the target card and the store credit). Compared to other gift card offers like Dell, this one is probably a much easier one to use.
Quest 2 is def worth it for a great VR exp fun for the whole family

I'm going to have to make sure not to use the Quest 3 then, I guess.
Two questions:
1. Is this a good entry point? Good games for kids under 10 (ie, not superviolent FPSs)?
2. Might hold onto this until August as a birthday present. Is new tech/version coming in next four months that might drive price down on this model, or am I likely paying somewhere around the same price point for this in the summer?

My 7 year old likes this a lot. Several other kids have tried it. But we barely play video games. He plays maybe 30 minutes a week, when we're using it.
The quality is fantastic--better than you're expecting, if you've never tried VR. Also, it connects to PC easily for super high end visuals.
Price wise... It's not gonna get that much cheaper I don't think.
What the Quest 3 excels at is AR, full color environment pass through. If you want a complete VR and AR experience, save for the Quest 3; it's still well worth the money. You will be impressed. But again, this Q2 is perfect for non-AR use and cost less than half the Q3.
Also, seeing how cheap it is, I don't have to baby my Q2. I just play the heck out of it, sweat all over the head strap, and that's fine. If it breaks I'll just buy a new one.
