I don't think most people have problems playing one song. Sonos subs are filled with these comments and turns out to be network related. It's not only about the router there can also be interference in your building or other reasons.
Trust me if people could not play one song on these speakers they wouldn't sell and everyone would bash them

This is what I have in the bedroom but it is one of the small ones on each side of the bed. I have the large one like this on my desk in the office and it is connected to the tv as well. It sounds amazing. It sounds much better than my huge Google max speaker.
i use 4 OG homepods in the living room and they sound great. much better than the minis but honestly using them in the bedroom they dont sound bad.

My original Homepods finally started working pretty well, but in the years I've had them, I've had various issues where they were a PITA... they certainly didn't "just work"... but fortunately they work better now than in the past.
I will likely not be buying Homepods again unless there is some great deal on them or they put Ethernet jacks on them. At least Apple is smart enough to offer Apple TVs with Ethernet jacks.
