That's true. And for anyone who lives within driving distance of a Microcenter that has one in stock, that would be a better deal. For the other 99% of people, including me, this might be the best they can get.
Pretty comprehensive comparison of 9th gen vs 10th gen here:
Highlights:
10.2 vs 10.9 inch display
A13 vs A14 chip
Lightning+headphone jack vs USB-C connector
Wifi 5 vs Wifi 6
8MP vs 12MP 4K video/60fps camera
Touch ID in Home button vs side button
I got one from Best Buy in store, no problem matching MC. They said it was on their "approved list" for price matching, even though the nearest MC is about 100 miles away.

I bought an iPad Air 4 and I must say putting the fingerprint reader in the side button is a major failure. It fails 90% of the time when I use it in the Targus case specifically designed for it. Got to the point where I disabled the code on it. Either that or use it without a case. Huge failure IMO.

I have a Unicorn Beetle case for my 10th gen (I'm a klutz, drop it all the time) and the side Touch ID is fully exposed. I find it much more reliable than the button, and if I crack the screen I won't have to deal with the fragile ribbon cable connecting to the button.
This or iPad Air 5. Coming from 32GB iPad Air 2 and I'll replace her cracked iPad Air screen with mine.
As someone pointed out the iPad has laminated screen. Having said that. I bet if you goto a Best Buy and compare this to an air, I bet you would have a hard time telling the difference between the two.
If you plan on doing any video editing with davinci resolve, Final Cut or anything like that, your better off going with the new air

I would recommend looking at Capcut for very easy to use casual edit that is powerful enough for any novice if he's looking at iPad 10.
Capcut is likely good enough. Divinci will want M1 for full features, not sure about Final Cut but probably the same.
10th gen sucks. Picked this for $224.99 from best buy online in February 2023 based on the deal that was posted here. Before I opened it I read more about the 10th generation and found out it is an undesirable tablet with some questionable design choices, so I got rid of it.
The 10th gen is objectively better than the 9th gen. With a possible exception for those who feel really strongly about having a physical home button.
What could you possibly think is better about the 9th gen over the 10th gen other than price?

No. The other way around. air5 is the way to go. It's a considerably better device
