google streamer is honestly pretty garbage, they really dropped the ball
old processor, not as much support, doubled the price from the chromecast,
like WTF google?
It was same price during Prime week less than a month ago.

Maybe they're realizing they need to discount this now due to its ancient hardware.
Anything Google touches turns to crap.. they will force everything through the cloud and make it run like garbage like they always do. Check out Google graveyard for more reference. Personally wouldn't buy anything they make ever again.

Hardware is embarrassingly ancient. Hard pass.

I've had one for almost a year and runs KODI much better than my 4K fire tv stick ever did. Well worth the duckies imo.

Don't get me wrong I love the original Shield it's still running strong (with some reboots needed sometimes) but $170 for a hardware this old??? I think is like $80 too expensive IMHO.

Huh? You don't know how to side load apps on your Apple TV? Sad
You can't side load apps which are only available for an Android platform, such as Tivimate for IPTV or Syncler for movies and shows.

When it comes to being able put whatever you want, however you want it, Nvidia Shield is miles better than any commercial streamer on the market. The only way, I'd ever use an Apple product for TV streaming is if you used a Mac Mini.

The Xbox does actually support a ton of codes and passthrough but the Plex app is notoriously bad on it compared to the shield. From what I have read, the shield and pure android clients have the best support as Plex clients.
A happy side effect of getting Xbox for media is that it also plays all the newest games too.

What's the pro's and con's on this device vs the Roku ultra for less than 1/2 the price?

Are you an apple user for other things? I've been thinking about getting and Apple TV but it would be our only Apple product in the house. I wasn't sure if you need to be fully in the Apple ecosystem for it to make sense.
I don't have an Apple TV, but my first foray into Apple was getting an iPad (thanks Slickdeals).
Then my wife got an iPhone because it definitely makes things brain dead for non-tech people.

That's when I noticed that a lot of things do get better when you are bought into the Apple eco-system.

My opinion is that while you may be able to use it, there will most likely be some features that don't get used unless you are in the Apple eco-system.
It's by design.
e.g.
Feature A is brain dead to use if you Apple software.
If not, then you can still use Feature A,but have to jump through three hoops to get there.

As for this deal, I share the similar sentiment that at $170, it's a little much for its age.

Crazy how this thing is relatively ancient but also probably the best option for a lot of use cases. Geforce now for instance which apple tv lacks.

I am not going to be that guy, but why not buy a Series S at a discount which does everything Shield can do and more
edit: seems already mentioned and I agree, series S is more versatile and web browser is extremely good for streams Wink

Love my shield, but it's unfortunate that Google forced NVIDIA to upgrade the OS to include a bunch of advertisement.

It got annoying having to force it to stay with the same version, so I put this in the bed room and got an Apple TV for living room

I have several shield pros, would never go back to roku or firetv. A new version would be nice, but honestly I'm not sure what anys complaint about codecs or weak hardware are about. The shield pro can easily stream 4k uhd bluray remux's using any of the major media players (plex, emby, jellyfin), it supports hdr10 and Dolby vision, it supports Dolby atmos, DTS master audio. 4k60 youtube, 1080p twitch. Everything is very quick and responsive. Genuinely asking any of the haters what they feel it's missing.

Still the best android TV experience outside of a Sony TV, but the hardware is really dated its astounding to me that Nvidia barely budged on the retail price of these since launch even back in 2015, new SOC update in 2019 was a minor improvement but still incredibly dated by todays standards.

Yes its still more fluid & customizable of an experience than most TV OS & has Home Theater functions you wont find on any other device or Smart TV, but goddamit Nvidia... just give us a real hardware upgrade 2024.... Its nearly 10 years old now....
