It's for those of us who bought a decent WiFi 6 router just before mesh networks became a thing and don't want to spend more money. I have one of these and it was easy to set up and works as intended. Considering getting another just in case. There's also a deal on an updated version which I also bought for a relative:
Limited-time deal: TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Extender, 2024 Wirecutter Best WiFi Extender, 1.2Gbps home signal booster, Dual Band 5GHz/2.4GHz, Covers Up to 1500 Sq.ft and 30 Devices ,support Onemesh, One Ethernet Port (RE315) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RHD97QY
I have 5500 sq ft house on 2 acres. These fill in the holes, and easy to separate the 2,4 and 5 bands with distinct SSID in order to attach things that only work on 2,4
What's the benefit of intelligent hand-off for devices that aren't mobile?

I snagged one, coupon was right there on the product homepage where the price is shown. To check if algorithm just doesn't like you, you can load the link in a private webpage like incognito in Chrome and check if you see it. If you see it there but not when you're logged in then the Amazon algorithm doesn't like you today

Should the main router be Tplink too? Does it work if the main router is from another brand?

I have a step-up model of this and it works with an ASUS router. Can't say it's worked great, but works.

Love these, we have 2 in operation at all times (plus the main router) and it's the cheapest and easiest quasi-mesh setup I've found for the price. Be forewarned, they do tend to die after 1-2 years, we just paid $15 the other day and have owned 4 total in 5 years — 2 dead. I'm tempted to pick up a few more. TP Link's app makes setup and monitoring super easy.

Are there mesh nodes that are as low-profile as this?

Relatively new to mesh but not super impressed so far. Signal strength seems to be much better from my traditional ASUS router.

though the cost is low, i recommend spend more getting a mesh.
extender cannot node steering, if you put a same name, it gives a lot of problems.
