Let's call this for what it is -- "used". You're buying a two year old used computer. One you can get a brand new one of the latest model (with much higher specs) for $500-600.
The price for a new one is so cheap ($499 at Apple education store) … with much better specs (twice the RAM) … it makes no sense to buy this at a $299 price point.
Why? The gap is still 40% and there's a lot of people who just want an office/browsing Mac and realistically don't need the extra ram.

You mean versus the 2024 M4 version of Mac Mini?

It's really a 30 day, or 60 day used machine. Whatever their return policy is. It just happens to have a 2 year old processor. This would be a great device for anyone that doesn't code or create content. If you disagree I'd be curious why.

Yeah, it's probably people who returned this for the new M4 Mac mini. These are still being sold brand new. I think this is a steal for the price and for every day use.

As others have said, I think a brand new M4 is worth the extra money.

Quote from Ananke :
Browsers start heavily tasking 8GB devices nowadays. Absolutely useless from a professional standpoint too - almost everything uses some kind of AI these days and it needs RAM. Get the iPad Air for basic tasks and USB it to a monitor or a TV, it'll do the same plus you get the portability. Apple missed the AI opportunity by flooding their consumer base with 8GB devices, now they'll need to trade in and discount their latest tech to catch up.

You get downvoted but it's true. Bought the wife an 8gb air and the ram on that thing gets filled from browsing and music (with high memory pressure).

Will 8GB memory be enough to smoothly handle Apple Intelligence? I feel like 16GB will the new minimum once Apple Intelligence goes into a full effect.

Based on Siri, I do not have much confidence in Apple AI

The M4 with 16GB RAM standard is definitely worth the extra $200 (on the EDU store) in my opinion.

I dont think so. I got a m1 mac air openbox in apr 24 and I think they cycle the openbox countless times. It was activated in 2021 and likely multiple sold as openbox and returned because it had a broken key. So, I can assume openbox can have multiple owners over years. Only openbox that likely worth could be a the current gen or previous gen
