This is honestly a really good deal. It has an extra ram slot which is very rare these days. You could slap another 16gb in there for $20 and have a fairly powerful little laptop for $340.

Seems like no USB C dock support. I would have pulled the trigger if it did.

Can you? The manual states that you can only at 8gb extra ram for 16 total.
Two Q&A from the BestBuy product page suggests you can go up to 24 GB:

I wonder what the exact specs of the soldered RAM are. You would have to purchase something similar to maintain dual channel and not gimp the soldered RAM.

I know you said you won't upgrade it, but you could just buy this and have 24GB of ram for $340 total. It's super easy to add, so I'd just have the kids dad do it. https://a.co/d/7q9tksY
To be fair, while the act of putting in the stick of RAM is brain dead easy, some laptops are easier to open and get to the slot than others. Do you know what the process is for this particular model? Most laptops are mildly hard to pop open, especially if you don't have some kind of plastic tool. Some require finding all the sticky things to pull off to find the screws. Mind you, if you're at all comfortable with trying to work on laptops, it's usually not terribly hard, especially if there's a model-specific tutorial, but unless it has an individual panel for the ram stick (haven't seen that on a laptop in years), I wouldn't call it "super easy". I don't see a picture of the bottom on ebay.

I have lenovo i3 from bestbuy for $250 and prob best value you can get for speed and upgradability. Screen, keyboard, touchpad are decent enough vs something from HP, like it better than Vivobook (got the $200 one too but gave it to my aunt).

Lenovo and Acer are usually the easiest ones to remove the bottom chassis. Asus is a little bit difficult but still not hard.
HP is the most trickiest, which needs to have the sticky thing removed to find the screws. The case is also difficult (very tight) to remove.

You want to get the cheapest go on eBay. Many people upgrading sell their puny 8GB sticks for like $15
Bought the 8GB memory on Amazon for $15, installed today. Upon boot up of laptop in windows 11, only 37% memory in use. https://a.co/d/3F9oltC

Just take below for your information. Given the existing 8GB:
  • By adding 4GB, 8/12 GB will be running in dual-channel mode (partial)
  • By adding 8GB, 16/16 GB will be running in dual-channel mode (full)
  • By adding 16GB, 16/24 GB will be running in dual-channel mode (partial)
  • By adding 32GB, 16/40 GB will be running in dual-channel mode (partial)

By activating IrisĀ® Xe Graphics and dual-channel, you will see the significant benefits anyway.
Interesting. Seems like adding another 8GB stick would yield the best performance. 16GB should be plenty for a Windows 11 laptop, although I do not know how much RAM the iGPU takes.

Here are some fun facts for what you need to fulfill full dual channel requirements:

Requirements for Dual Channel mode
Arrangement of the DIMMs in pairs in every memory channel (module pair)
Identical module capacity of the module pair (128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, etc.)
Identical DRAM technology of the module pair (128MB, 256MB, 512MB or 1GB)
Identical DRAM bus width of the DRAMs used on the module pair (x8 or x16)
Both modules either only single-sided (1 rank) or only dual-sided (2 rank)
Mirror-inverted assembly of the memory slots
Please note: Configurations that do not fulfil these requirements, automatically work in Single Channel mode.

The slowest DIMM built into the system determines the pace of the bus clock and the memory access for the complete RAM.

The following requirements within a module pair do not have to be fulfilled:
Same manufacturer of the module or the DRAM devices
Identical timing, access times etc.
Same speed category of the DDR modules (PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200)

Edit:
Did a little research on the Intel XE chips. They use 512MB of the RAM as default, and have access to 50% of the available system RAM. So if you add another 8GB to this laptop for a total of 16GB, the iGPU could use up to 8GB of system RAM in extreme circumstances. I doubt it ever comes close to that unless you use this laptop for gaming. I'm not sure if adding more RAM would benefit by giving the iGPU more RAM, or just going with 8GB would still give you the best performance with full dual channel.

Thanks for this detailed info. It's a bit over my head, but can anyone else confirm whether it's best to add an 8GB or 16GB stick?

It depends on the use cases and user behavior though the more is usually the better.

Adding a 8GB stick gives the best value for money (most importantly, 16GB of the total would be running in dual-channel anyway). It should be sufficient for most users (>90%) purchasing this laptop.
If you usually keep 30+ Chrome tabs opened, and watching youtube, zoom, office, ....... all at once, go for 16GB stick.

Does anybody have a problem with WiFi turning off randomly and even the icon to select network disappears and the only way to get it back is by turning the airplane mode on and then switching it off?
