When that happens, nobody will truly own their movies ever again.

I know someone who purchased 8000+ movies on Vudu (Now Fandango). What happens to that extremely expensive collection if Fandango ever goes out of business?

It's unfortunate and short sighted that people prefer convenience over actual ownership.

Not quite sure what you're going on about? Blu-Ray is 1080p native resolution which in my (and I'm sure others) opinion is hardly perfect. 4K Ultra HD has native 4K resolution. "Filters" aside (not sure what filters you're talking about...upscaling?) I'd rather watch a 4K Ultra HD disc than a blu-ray.

In any case, there is a much less expensive Panasonic 4K Ultra HD player that is low on bells and whistles that I snagged for $123 at BB [bestbuy.com] (open box excellent). Reviews say it does what it's supposed to -- play a 4K disc well, but is a minimalist player. It does state it does 4K upscaling, but not sure it does the same quality as the 820 and the 420. I'll have it in a couple days.

Do you think this would get lower as $249.99? I want this but don't like the price. I use PS3 and Xbox Series X to play blu Ray movies

Unlikely unless you find it as OB or used.

If you're comparing it to a game console, you should be comparing(looking for) it to the 420 imo.
Game consoles do not support DV on disc, the 420 will upscale BR disc(and DVD) just as good as this.

How come these got so expensive? I got one for about $100 before COVID 4k UHD BD with HDR10 and Dolby Vision. I think they used to be well under $200 four yrs ago. I dont think they even make 3D blu rays anymore

They do but I have to order them mostly from overseas. I know 3D was mostly a side comment on your post but I still like that format on my projector haha.

Here is a video on YouTube [youtube.com], where more or less respected tech youtuber discusses exactly this subject.
TLDR: Dolby Vision makes noticeable difference in picture quality on disks with Dolby Vision. Everything else is more or less the same.

I picked up my 2nd one 3 weeks ago open box at Best Buy for $308. I couldn't pass the deal up.

I needed one for my bedroom. I need to buy a new TV. Bedroom TV doesn't have HDR and isn't 4K. I bought it in 2017 beautiful picture 58" will give it to my mother. I want an 85" for my bedroom.

I have moved back into buying physical media mostly 4k and cheap blu rays. Streaming is too expensive and my favorite titles are never free w/ many subscriptions still want $$.

I just found my nVidia 3D vision glasses the other day and I rem when I had a projector too. It was much better on a large format to be more immersive w/ 3D. I dont even know what to do with them these days.

More videophool crap.

Again, Blu-Ray is a PIXEL PERFECT FORMAT. These devices are doing nothing but adding filters on already mastered media.
This only applies if you're not doing any upscaling and if the player / display you're using supports all the disc features. Some cheap UHD BD players don't even support Dolby Vision and instead use the HDR10 fallback. The fallback HDR and DV will not look the same. And, if you're playing a disc that's not in the native display resolution, the upscaling can vary substantially between players.

So, yes, the player really can make a difference.

I don't think this model ever got that low, even back then.
Maybe you're thinking of 150/154, that would make more sense.

I just bought this Panasonic ub-820 to replace a Sony ubp-x800 but I am having issues with Blu-ray's disk and not being able to pause or stop and come back to the same place. It just starts all over. The Sony can start where you left off even if it turns off by itself. I am debating if I should return or keep it. I like that I can play 4K disc with DV but not sure it is worth spending that much money on a player that doesn't do what others do for less money. The TV this is connected is an LG 77" G4 . I even read that connecting a usb drive would work but it doesn't. I bought it bc of the so many rave reviews about the best in terms of playing videos and being the best HDR player. This might be but the OS leave a lot to be desired. IMHO

From personal experience I would say it's the opposite.

DV is dynamic HDR, there is no manipulation.

Static HDR has to be tone mapped and there is no standard.

Same holds true for upscaling BR&DBD disc.
That's basically what mainly separates players, not DV/HDR10+ in my experience.

If you're happy with the x800 just return this, it's not for everyone.
