I know someone who purchased 8000+ movies on Vudu (Now Fandango). What happens to that extremely expensive collection if Fandango ever goes out of business?

In any case, there is a much less expensive Panasonic 4K Ultra HD player that is low on bells and whistles that I snagged for $123 at BB [bestbuy.com] (open box excellent). Reviews say it does what it's supposed to -- play a 4K disc well, but is a minimalist player. It does state it does 4K upscaling, but not sure it does the same quality as the 820 and the 420. I'll have it in a couple days.

If you're comparing it to a game console, you should be comparing(looking for) it to the 420 imo.
Game consoles do not support DV on disc, the 420 will upscale BR disc(and DVD) just as good as this.

TLDR: Dolby Vision makes noticeable difference in picture quality on disks with Dolby Vision. Everything else is more or less the same.
I needed one for my bedroom. I need to buy a new TV. Bedroom TV doesn't have HDR and isn't 4K. I bought it in 2017 beautiful picture 58" will give it to my mother. I want an 85" for my bedroom.
I have moved back into buying physical media mostly 4k and cheap blu rays. Streaming is too expensive and my favorite titles are never free w/ many subscriptions still want $$.
Again, Blu-Ray is a PIXEL PERFECT FORMAT. These devices are doing nothing but adding filters on already mastered media.
So, yes, the player really can make a difference.
Maybe you're thinking of 150/154, that would make more sense.
TLDR: Dolby Vision makes noticeable difference in picture quality on disks with Dolby Vision. Everything else is more or less the same.
DV is dynamic HDR, there is no manipulation.
Static HDR has to be tone mapped and there is no standard.
Same holds true for upscaling BR&DBD disc.
That's basically what mainly separates players, not DV/HDR10+ in my experience.
