Its because of type of solder they use. I stuck mine in the oven after following other peoples suggestions and it worked. Been working just fine for the past few months now.
edit: Had it for 1.5 years then started to boot loop, then disassembled it and stuck it in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, after letting it cool down, reassembled it, and it's been working ever since.
My first unit died little over one year, and Motorolla service department sent me a replacement. The second unit also died in about a year. It's okay when it works, but it breaks too soon.

Dealt with connection issues repeatedly, and had to reset often. Finally picked up a Chinese no-name adapter on Amazon that works nearly every time. This MA-1 is garbage imo.

I got nearly 3 years out of before it wouldn't connect to AA. We'll see if support is helpful.
One thing I eventually learned about this was that the receivers for toll roads around here cause it to drop connection.
I looked at this but ended up with a generic one that has been working flawlessly for over a year. Does what it needs to do and my phone connects flawlessly. 10 bucks less looks like.

I've gone through two of these so far, each lasting about 2-2.5 years garaged, and recently replaced it with a China brand adapter which is much smaller. This is not a bad price for one, as MSRP is too much. However, in the years since this was released, some of the cheaper Chinabrand adapters are just as fast, if not faster, and more reliable. AAwireless (from Europe) released a new model recently that is worth trying out.
I spent like $30 on a raspberry pi with enclosure for the github mod that was posted in a previous Slickdeals thread. What a headache that was. Never got it to work. Threw the raspberry pi chip in a drawer. I'll never use it. Should have just bought this Motorola and let it break after 5 months. 😂
