The TX NR7100 stands out as a budget friendly way to get Dirac Live, with the $599 price repeatedly framed as the cheapest current entry point and especially strong value when the extra code drops it further. It is praised for easy setup, solid sound, and enough power for normal listening, with 7.2.2 support and two sub outputs adding flexibility. The main drawbacks are its age, lack of pre outs, and basic AccuEQ fallback, plus reports of limp mode or protection behavior with low impedance speakers and occasional reliability concerns. A good fit if Dirac matters more than future proofing or heavy amp expansion.

Yes I know I may need an external amp but it also means I need a used AVR with preouts and I have no idea how or where to get one that isn't somebody else junk.
Not sure what you mean by junk.
If you stick to popular brands, it shouldn't be junk.

If you mean the condition.
Asking questions like condition, why selling and demo prior to buying.
If they can't demo should be a red flag imo.

So guver65 is a good example.
15 years old, died, can't guarantee that it works.
Free, sure no gamble.
Cost, look elsewhere imo.

By junk I mean unreliable. Nothing lasts forever and people do not always tell the truth about old stuff they are trying to unload. If you buy a used unit from a private seller how do you demo it? Buying used just seems like a crapshoot.

You can add pre outs to this receiver using Russound line out. I bought this receiver few years ago open box for around $400. This receiver wasn't strong enough for my front towers and center speaker running 5.2.4 so I added line outs and have my fronts hooked up to an onkyo 9 channel amplifier which gave me the power I needed.

Correct that is the gamble buying used.
You keep that in mind on what cost you're willing to gamble.

In my experience, look for someone knowledgeable that can tell you of use and why selling are good indicators.
They will usually have a way to demo/test it out also.

I get/understand not liking the hassle.
If you have no brand preference, this is pretty good for new.
It might be worth paying the higher cost for that reassurance.

So you basically spent about $200 worth of Russound for your workaround? If buying new, I'd save the $200 and put it towards an RZ30 deal instead of this 7100 (it's SD and Adorama is still around so you know it's coming...).

Wait... why is spending $700-800 better than spending $200???

tuan360 paid around $400 for his open box 7100 and I estimated an additional $200 of Russound line out product. $400+$200 = $600. You don't think paying $700-$800 to avoid this Frankenstein setup is worth it to get pre-outs built in? Folks getting in on this deal are not paying the open box price.

You seem to have skipped some logic and math classes!

Do you mean the logic & math that as you just pointed out, he already "owns" this Frankenstein setup and would be paying an ADDITIONAL $700-800 to do exactly the same thing!

I'm all ears, please educate me on the "logic and math" why this is better?

I'm not telling tuan360 to buy a new AVR. I'm recommending others don't do what he did just to ADD pre-outs to the 7100. How many times did you get dropped as a kid?

Except, you were replying directly to tuan360 so it sounded like you were telling him to spend exceptionally more money.

Notice how my second sentence begins with an "if". That's called a conditional statement. I'm not telling tuan360 to do anything nor did he express a desire for a new AVR.

It sure looks like you were "telling" him what he should do/ have done.... why!?
I'll ask again, if you own the 7100 & need preouts, why is $700-800 better than $200?

BTW "Others/if" needed pre-outs, they would not be looking/considering at/the 7100 ...... DUH!
