I also had old T-Mobile SIM cards so the rep activated the new free line on an existing SIM card. I didn't have to pay the extra SIM card and activation fee then.
The only part which didn't work was to move my prepaid T-Mobile Connect number over to the free line as it needs to be a new line or ported in from a different provider. Probably to shine on their internal KPI adding new lines.
1) get a new phone promo either from Costco or T-Mobile for that same line ?
2) since u also apply for T-Mobile port in credit, did u enter the original byod number assigned or the new ported number for the $200 shop card ?
2. My $100 was denied for incorrect activation or something. called in and they resubmitted and its approved. so that should come in a week or so.
3. I did buy Pixel 4a5g on 24 month credit. Waiting for trade in credit from assurant.

Any input, and best plans to switch to?

But honestly, better off just porting main number to google voice and not have to deal with these shenanigans.
To be totally honest I did not even know about the free iPhone promo until the rep mantioned it and added it for me. I had to pay $42 in taxes but the phone was completely free over 24 month bill credits, and was able to add the line at no extra cost. Im not sure if this is YMMV as my buddy who is on the same plan as me was told he could not stack the promos.
2-I intered the original BYOD Number
