I had this player and discs would freeze often. I learned it wasn't just my player, Panasonic's are known to freeze up and have issues on a few Dolby visions discs. I bought a used Sony x700 for 1/5 the price of this and never looked back.

The consoles won't give you Dolby Vision on 4K Blu-ray discs.
This is true, but it's worth noting that the PS5 is HDMI 2.1 compliant, so it can come down the road with a software update.

Kodi on Shield can't do Dolby Vision, the 820 also has tonemapping the shield doesn't.

I think to get DV sony would have to pay a license fee, if they were going to they probably already would have. Don't look for PS5 to get DV for movies.

For those wondering, my eyes see a difference between 4K Dolby Vision via streaming (eg, Disney+) and 4K Dolby Vision from a disc via a player like this one…the physical media/player looks better than the streaming equivalent on my OLED TV. And yes, I have internet speed to support the streaming equivalent (600mbps)

Yes my 4k Blu-Ray player definitely looks better than steaming but steaming is so damn convenient that my wife does not care about discs at all. If it's a movie my wife wants to watch I'll steam it so she can watch multiple times.

My local bestbuy has an open box for $280 and I have a $40 gc. Debating on getting that.
In a heart beat I would grab it at that price!
I had issues with each of the other brands which I got tired of.
In almost a year I have not had ONE issue with either 820 or 420.

If you have a projector, Panny is pretty much a must have because of that "optimizer"

LOLOL, what he's saying is Arrrrrghh Matey laugh out loud

It's unfortunate but true that Arrrgh matey version are actually better playback systems than the disc. They do full bitrate as well, so there's no quality loss vs disc version.

But of course the Disc has collectible value. arrghmatey does not.

The streams are NOT equivalent. Bitrate is also not directly comparable , because there're different compression algorithms at work. There's average bitrate, and there's peak bitrate. Two files can have the same peak bitrate, but the higher average bitrate file will look better.

Disc version is far less compressed. The streamed versions are blotchy and much less detailed (blurry). nod

The economics works out such that the stream services are motivated to give you as little as possible, whereas the discs really only come in 2 sizes, 50gb for short movies and 100gb for long movies.

If you have a limited budget....
You are better of buying snagging something one of the LG 4k player refurbs for $99 ish that pop up time and again
Then spend the extra $300 you saved on a better TV/Display

Its going to make a LOT more difference than a 4K player....and then you will also enjoy a better picture for the majority of the time( for most people) when you are not watching 4K discs

Yes, but Plex can.

I have a LG DV UHD player to play my disks. I have a shield to play my rips from my NAS. There is nothing wrong with using a Shield, but it is a slightly different use case. I prefer Kodi, but I use Plex when I need to play DV rip. Everything has it's purpose.

I have two Shields and this Panny 4K player. The Panny player playing discs beats anything streamed and it isn't particularly close. I also like owning 4K Blu rays of movies I really enjoy and it keeps from chewing up internet data caps. This player is just awesome. Can't say enough good things about it.

They didn't get "Atmos" or "DTS:X" licensed either?

Aren't people worried about the disappearance of physical media with an expensive player like this?
This is just a very high end player. Physical media will be around for a long time. I personally use a Sony that has Dolby Vision and it was half this price. Allot of TVs do not even support DV so it's not absolutely necessary, but it is beautiful looking.

The only way I see physical media decreasing in the future is if we make the transition to 8K….I don't think we can put a movie in 8K on a disk at this point, that's a ton of data.
