Those are basically different ways to get more internet coverage in the house. Spare the technical details, unless Ethernet is available or using the electrical lines in the house with special complex signal processing for carrying communication between the wireless access points, one will need to sacrifice radio bandwidth to serve as the backbone. Newer technology can use higher frequency and will provide higher bandwidth but may also reduce the physical range. Newer technology can also use multiple frequencies to delivered higher speed to more devices. The discussion here is asking if the money spent on the extender will be worth awhile when compared to other solutions.
Good deal but these things always throttle my internet. It could literally be right next to the router and it'll still cut down the wifi speed. Not sure if just me but doesn't seem worth it
That's how range extender work. Best approach would be to go mesh, powerline, or a new router if performance is a major concern.

I've been using this for about a year to extend internet into my backyard. It works for me. I'm able to watch videos and use the internet when it didn't reach that far before.

don't think these are worth it unless it's being used for some iot device that's in some very remote location that doesn't need a good internet connection. i've had a 802.11n version of this, and while it was good at first, the internet speed is cut in half while connected to it, and signal quality degraded over a period of two years. at that point i switched to mesh combo and never looked back.

Agreed, I use this for 1 year and connection was horrible and keep disconnecting. I switched to TP Link Powerline and connected to another router to get the extra wifi network, it works so much better.

I have this and a TP AC1750 in mesh mode. It's nice that my phone always stays on Wifi instead of switching between 2 separate SSID. Transfer rate is not max though, so I use a TP Link powerline network adapter for my computer.

I bought that range extender a while back. It's not that good. It has to be close to my router to grab a decent signal. It's located about 20 feet away from my Fios router and the signal is weak. It's basically an open space, doesn't have to go through walls.

Yes, this should work with ANY router as a straight-up extender, but OneMesh mode only works with other TP-Link devices that support OneMesh.

Thanks OP. Got one.

Going to use the RJ45 on it with a ooma VOIP wired only device.

I can now move it to a different spot instead of being next to the router

The second concern I had were people's reviews about this product dropping connections often, particularly when the device had aged a few months. I haven't experienced any such problems yet.

Even the reduced rate is probably a lot faster than your internet connection unless it is FTTH or T1. So, yeah, I'd say it is just you.

I'm looking to do the same thing. Do you have it plugged into an outside outlet or an inside outlet on an outside wall? I'm leaning towards the latter.

I wouldn't recommend this. Even when the software was updated, it will out of nowhere, unable to give wifi signals, and needed restarting each time. Even the tplink app would not detect it unless it was restarted.

Just FYI, you can't turn off the repeater function in case you want to only use it as a WiFi ethernet adapter
