I have MSI X570 Tomahawk, and it has been but a disappointment so far. Very buggy and unstable.
IMHO, If you are willing to pay more than 300$ for motherboard itself, i strongly recommend ASUS ROG STRIX or ROG Crosshair VIII Hero X570 board. But it will be more than enough if you can snag one of MSI X570 Tomahawk, you can still save some money and provide almost similar experience. There can be a lot of debate whether you should not spend too much money on the motherboard itself, but there is a reason so many people have chosen MSI X570 Tomahawk. It will not have fancy RGB on the ROG boards, but will have pretty good headroom for overclocking (If you need any) and any troubleshooting. Enjoy your shopping!
Just buy a cheap x570 board. People spend way to much on motherboards.

Honestly, I'm still using my 470 strix and it's been good with the 5900. I think Asus just makes good boards. You do need it functional to do BIOS update though, so if you currently have no CPU that's not an option.

I have the same board and haven't had a single issue

Same, running x570 for 2 years and no issues. Really good board at a very fair price

I have the 5900x paired with the Asus x570 Tuf Plus wifi. Works perfectly. I am doing a bit of overclocking/undervolting, no issues.

Commented in a different thread but i recommend the Asus Rog Strix Gaming B550M and i variants, depending on the size of your case. nzxt makes the h220/h220i that will pack any gpu and psu

I bought this CPU back on June 1st for this price from MC. For motherboard, MC had a returned Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi board for dirt cheap.

I used a 360mm liquid cooler, and combined with the board's auto-overclocking, the sky's the limit as far as performance. The most demanding software I run is Davinci Resolve, and the performance improvement over my old i7-3770k system is incredible. Last night I rendered a 77 minute movie in a little over 4 minutes, it would have taken well over half an hour on the old system.

That's good to know. I've been using the same mobo with a Ryzen 2600 and 580 gpu. I've always had the occaisional shutdown followed by pop-up label (after re-booting) blaming "AMD Wattman." JayzTwoCents said he and his crew also had some issue with randon AMD reboots, and that the problem got better eith each new release of AMD cpus. They've had no shutdowns with 5000 series and thats enough to make me upgrade right there, I don't want to buy a new mobo yet because not enough mobos have full powered USB C ports. My phones, tablets, external drives, watches etc are all USB C now and mobos just dont really reflect that reality yet. I dont want a PC with one USB C port on the back running at old USB specs.
That's interesting. No "random" reboots here. I'm not overclocking anything. If you're overclocking anything then try not doing that. My next thought would be to try another power supply.

LOL, I have the same CPU and MOBO combo and I'm sending this message from it. Also looking at the 5900x and the Asus TUF mobo that has been mentioned here.

Are there any suggestions for a quiet/high airflow case? I'm looking at getting the Phanteks Eclipse P600S. Thanks
If you want a high airflow case, get the Cooler Master NR600. I have 2 of them in my house and they are awesome.

Don't get that P600S. The intake in relatively choked.

If you really like Phantek, look at the Phantek EVOLV SHIFT 2 AIR, P500A, P400A, P300A with mesh panels. Never get a case with a solid or glass panel on the front. Even when they are offset they don't perform as well as mesh.

AMD, as well as Intel, will release a new upgrade chip every year anyway to lure in people to upgrade.
And with pandemic is under control in manufacturing countries, normal logistics resumed and people rushing to upgrade their home computer for sudden working at home or stuck gaming at home situation is gone, I believe stocking issue will soon be gone as well

Is the $79 for 4 year protection plan worth it?

I'm not familiar with Amazon's Protection plans. I have only ever bought a protection plan form Microcenter for computer component.

Okay, so what is everyone buying this CPU for? Please don't say just gaming. You can get close to the same gaming performance from a 5600X or 5800X and save cash to put towards your GPU.

I bought the 3900X last year. I'm a software engineer and wanted to be able to run virtual machines without having to struggle with performance issues. It's been great.

If you're on your computer all day and it's the primary tool for your career, then going with an upper midrange CPU is worth it.
