Yes, very much so.
Yes, it's 2x the cores and threads. That being said if you're just using your cpu for web browsing you probably won't notice a difference.
The 5800X3D is a brand new beast that just came out, it has WAY more L3 cache (96MB), and whoops everything in gaming performance.

Any suggestions for a good, low cost motherboard for the 5600g, that doesn't require a BIOS update to work with the chip?

Check gigabyte. Most of them support qflash and can be flashed without a cpu installed.

For me, it will extend the life of my PC for a number of years... I don't game, and for image processing/rendering/multitasking going to 12 cores may /sometimes/ make a difference.

Was hoping they'd do something silly and make the 5950X sub $450 Frown

There was a week it dipped below $500 but I figured they might be aggressive and go further. Still going to hold out hope this happens before year end...

Maybe this Asus Prime [amazon.com] for a few bucks more or this A320M-K [amazon.com] for only $52. Though A320 needs a bios update before 5xxx can run on it Bios for A320m-k [asus.com]
