I have a Surface Pro 7 and I got to use a macbook air m1 for couple of days. While the hardware is great, adaption to mac os was a huge pain for me. It is a steep learning curve if you have never used mac before and some of the features that are just present and work in Windows are either just not there or are complicated to replicate in mac. I'm sure that is true for some of the mac features as well with regards to Windows.
Despite the struggle I'm still debating whether to go with the mac or not.
I returned my first MacBook like 12 years ago for the same reason. Tried again a couple years later and have had a Mac for my primary machine since then. There's a definite learning curve but I'm happier on macOS. That being said though, I still have a Windows machine in case I ever need it and also to troubleshoot when friends/relatives have problems.

Do you guys know anyone who actually owns one? How real is the memory swap issue with this 8GB/256GB combo? I'm only holding off cz I don't want the SSD to die in a couple of years and Apple charging me like $500 to fix it. Frown
What memory swap? It's not user replaceable. It's saudered in. Yes, the SSD will eventually fail.

I'm currently not in a position to have 2 personal laptops so that's why I'm being extra cautious about getting a mac cz that will mean selling my surface. Confused

One thing I'm curious about regarding only 8 GB of memory is how well it handles swapping between multiple users. How much memory is still being used on the first user that doesn't log off and how that effects the second user. Can anyone give an informed opinion?

They're not traditional mechanical hard drives. It's solid state PCI-Express storage. Much more costly than a slow hard drive (but there's still an Apple premium on it). You can get an external Thunderbolt or USB 3/4 disk.

So they can charge another 200 for a almost just as small 512gb ssd. I mean a 1 tb ssd isn't super expensive to just put in every device and charge the difference. Maybe so they can sell more apple storage and cloud storage.

I'm pretty sure you can buy an external Mac hard drive for more storage but it's a inconvenience.

Name 1 useful thing that you need but can't do on a Mac as efficiently as Windows? You can't. The only thing this can't do that a Windows laptop can, is play games which use directX. News flash: You already can't do that on 99% of windows laptops, unless if you get a thick ugly gaming laptop. That's literally it. If you don't play games on your laptop at crappy frame rates, then I can't see any way in which a Windows laptop would be better. The battery life on this is insanely long. Office suite works just like Windows (or you can use the free Apple version of keynotes, pages, etc.). Remote Desktop client works flawlessly. Native VPN client. Unix/bash shell.
Excel. If you build/use intense financial models for Wall Street and the like, then unfortunately Windows Excel is a necessity. I am impressed with MB hardware, know people love its OS, and recognize Wall Streeters are a tiny fraction of the population, but unfortunately this stupid reason makes Windows a necessity for me.

Maybe one day I'll be senior enough to just review pdf decks and model outputs and don't need to actually build/open up a model anymore.

I have the Bestbuy 10% off (up to $35) but it is associate with my Chase checking account instead of on my Chase credit card. Do I have to use my debit card in order to get the 10% off?
Yes. you need to use the debit card tied to that checking account to get the 10% off.
