Why so little storage space? Wtf? What's with PCs and laptops being sold with such small hard drives someone please explain and what's the solution if I buy?
You can buy an external hard disk that can be had at $100 for a TB.. or go for cloud based storage options. This was the main reason I went with a 512gb option by paying a premium. We all know it, apple just does this to make extra money. I believe in Karma, but looks like companies looting ppl by charging high premiums for upgrades is not part of it.

Thanks op. I've been sitting in the fence since the $799 student deal pricing started. Purchased and repped.

Excel. If you build/use intense financial models for Wall Street and the like, then unfortunately Windows Excel is a necessity. I am impressed with MB hardware, know people love its OS, and recognize Wall Streeters are a tiny fraction of the population, but unfortunately this stupid reason makes Windows a necessity for me.

Maybe one day I'll be senior enough to just review pdf decks and model outputs and don't need to actually build/open up a model anymore.
If Excel is an issue, buy it for Mac. Microsoft even made an M1 version just for Apple Silicon. What's the problem?

Heck, for non-Excel-pros, you can even run it all online in a browser; for plenty of people that's more than enough.

Yes, I'm aware for the Excel pros the online version does lack some features, and yes, I know most Excel plugins aren't Mac-compatible. For that 1% of the 1%, only Windows will do.

Yup, I tried to do the online price adjustment, they said they couldn't apply the student discount that shows up on the original purchase and the current offer. The customer service rep even recommended I return the laptop and pick up another one instead. Seems like more work for everyone....
I also tried, they wasted an hour of mine and then in the end said "as a one time courtesy, we will do it for you" lol. I told them, you aren't doing me a favor, I can simply return and buy again and Best Buy will be left with a open box.

I bought the 512/8 core version July 1 for 1099 (price matched with Costco) and they gave me a $100 today via chat.

One thing I'm curious about regarding only 8 GB of memory is how well it handles swapping between multiple users. How much memory is still being used on the first user that doesn't log off and how that effects the second user. Can anyone give an informed opinion?
Tried this today. With a second user actively logged in, it adds another 1-2GB of RAM usage. But as time goes on (10 min?) it seems to release the "other" user's usage from RAM, and overall usage sinks down to what it would be with just a single user logged in.

If you do light editing, I'm sure it's fine. The MBP screen is more color accurate. All the M1 macs do about the same including 8gb vs 16gb except with video encoding in which case the 16gb is faster. (Though not as much as you'd think)

I think the new models this year will show a clear processor power bump but whether it's $250 worth is what I'm debating. I'm guessing no as most Macs hold up well for 5-7 years and that $250 I can save for my next Mac. Rumors are that MagSafe is coming back though and the TouchBar may get left behind.
Agreed, I am a little skeptical about the ram that it comes with the M1... But thinking about it now... I mean my MBA (4gb ram) which would be able to still operate if just light use, but with work (multitasking excel, pdf and youtube... it somewhat has hiccup here and there) & MBP (intel i5 8gb), which is my primary work laptop... it still runs smoothly *knocks on wood*... so for my next mac(s), I would like to have at least 16gb of ram just so it can be future proof for the next 5-10 years, as you mentioned.

I am myself on the same boat... Do I jump now for $750 and use it as my "to-go" personal/work laptop, or shall I wait and may have to spend $400-500 more on a MBP with 16gb and processor bump. Magsafe is great when to use on the go, but I don't really see the use of the "touch bar" since I have to use an external keyboard w/ 10key for work (accountant).

Yes, the Excel pros are exactly what I'm referring to. Mac Excel just doesn't cut it. And I did say it impacts a sliver of the population. But it's a real part of the population in the corporate world.

Would someone please explain the 8-core / 7-core thing? I thought the spec sheet says 8-Core M1 for this. Am I incorrect?

Thanks for the info. I'd hate to have to completley log out so the wife or kids can use it for 15 minutes. It's almost time to upgrade the iPad but with their rising prices this is a better deal.
