I dont understand. Isn't the msrp of this chip 799? 789 is not a good deal since it's barely any off.

Actually gamers and the average person doesn't need 32GB of memory. For us people who do content creation, yeah 32GB is just enough. Okay, maybe sometimes not enough.
Yes. I have 32 as well. 90% of the time I do not need it. But when I do, I *really* do, so tossing another $100 into memory is well worth it for me. The same is true of 12 cores. most of the time, I could do just as well with 6. But when it's 2 in the morning the video needs to be ready in 30 minutes...

besides, I'm middle aged now and it's still cheaper than a corvette Cool

12900k is rumored to be better, cheaper and launches in 2 months. This is the latest of the rumors pointing to that:

Personally I would wait, you either end up with a better product via Intel 12th gen on a socket that will last 2-3 generations or you buy the 5950x at a discounted price in 2 months because AMD now has competition, but unfortunately AM4 is basically a dead socket at this point, so its a better upgrade than a full build.

Its only a better upgrade than a full build if you plan on upgrading.

I have never upgraded a mobo or processor. I buy the best when its out and proceed to use it for 5 or more years then rebuild.

Contrarian opinion. As the best processor of a socket and RAM generation, this processor is worth buying now. As someone who went from an intel 1150, you only had to see how well the 4790K, as the best processor of that socket, maintained $200 value for over half a decade.
Because upgrading to a better (and often cheaper) processor meant new MB, new RAM, etc. I have a 5600X right now and I'm keen to get one of these once they drop another $50-100.

Yup cashed out my 4790k in May last year for $199

You guys are off your rockers if you think platform compatibility even matters remotely. How often are people really upgrading their CPU *and* it's still on the same socket *and* you can use the same motherboard?
That was one of the selling points of AM4: years of CPU upgrades without having to get new motherboards and RAM. That's specifically why I bought in. And now I can get 25% more performance just by popping in another chip. Just because Intel hasn't been able to pull of such a thing yet doesn't make it a bad idea.

I've been on Intel platform since Sandy Bridge days. They like to release too many chipsets so motherboard manufacturers are forced to make too many motherboards for a slight improvement in performance. Then they change sockets and the amount of pins and then if you want to upgrade you're forced to do it all over again with another motherboard with a newer chipset. It's just really expensive in the Intel eco-system.

This year I finally moved over to the Ryzen platform from my Skylake CPU. I think I should've just went threadripper for more multi-core performance for content creation. The performance jump from Skylake to a Ryzen 5800x is amazing though, no more video playback lag for extremely large files with high bitrates. I should've just shifted to a threadripper build.

This processor has been hard to find for months, people have been flipping them if they could manage to get one for list price. Only recently have places started to be able to maintain stock. This is the first I've seen with any way of getting one even a penny below list. I bought one just last week for $830

I bought from Amazon for $820 last week. They just refunded me $28 for the difference

As far as skipping this for AM5. I kinda feel like the market for people who are buying $800 CPUs is comprised of people with enough disposable income to not care, people who will build a high end rig and keep a long time, or people that actually need it soon. Yes, AM5 will be better and provide an upgrade path. That said, as we saw with AM4, that upgrade path may not be wonderful for the first generation of AM5 boards. Also, DDR5 will be steadily getting better during the AM5 run as well as be expensive on launch. Do you wait for better boards and a more mature DDR5 when AM5 launches? It never ends.
When Ford or GM come out with a new model you don't want it in year 1 (maybe not in other years either lol). I learned with tech to not be an early adopter despite any hype AM5 five will have rough edges. DDR 5 will cost. PCIe 5.0 is coming out too.Im going to skip first AM5 chips, and so I got the 5900x. AM4 has issues (tolerances are way tight) but its relatively mature with Ryzen 5000s (even though I don't like x570 motherboards too much)
