besides, I'm middle aged now and it's still cheaper than a corvette

Personally I would wait, you either end up with a better product via Intel 12th gen on a socket that will last 2-3 generations or you buy the 5950x at a discounted price in 2 months because AMD now has competition, but unfortunately AM4 is basically a dead socket at this point, so its a better upgrade than a full build.
Its only a better upgrade than a full build if you plan on upgrading.
I have never upgraded a mobo or processor. I buy the best when its out and proceed to use it for 5 or more years then rebuild.
Because upgrading to a better (and often cheaper) processor meant new MB, new RAM, etc. I have a 5600X right now and I'm keen to get one of these once they drop another $50-100.
Yup cashed out my 4790k in May last year for $199
This year I finally moved over to the Ryzen platform from my Skylake CPU. I think I should've just went threadripper for more multi-core performance for content creation. The performance jump from Skylake to a Ryzen 5800x is amazing though, no more video playback lag for extremely large files with high bitrates. I should've just shifted to a threadripper build.

This processor has been hard to find for months, people have been flipping them if they could manage to get one for list price. Only recently have places started to be able to maintain stock. This is the first I've seen with any way of getting one even a penny below list. I bought one just last week for $830
I bought from Amazon for $820 last week. They just refunded me $28 for the difference
