Actually, it's much better for Gaming than perf bump in other tasks in comparison to 3950X.

What's a good motherboard to go with this? Is it going to be as helpful for rendering video as, say, a 3080?

Alder Lake (Intel 12th) gen comes out at the end of october. The $600 12900k is leaked to outperform the 5950x in both multicore slightly (heavy compute stuff like rendering, file compression) and single-core largely (gaming, app 'snappiness') performance. Also comes with PCIe 5.0, and DDR5 (some boards will support DDR4 if youre not ready to upgrade to DDR5), among other improvements.

If you already own an x570 AM4 motherboard it wont make sense to swap to Intel, but if you are on anything else, it definitely will make sense to wait, as either you get a better product for cheaper, or AMD will drop prices to stay competitive as Zen 4 wont launch until Q4 2022 according to their last event.

I'd get a 5900x, cheaper and easier to cool. I air cool mine and average 50c, and while gaming around 60c, with some rare 70c in synthetic benchmarks.

I guess you can air cool a 5950x, but it would be a lot more difficult with 8 core dies vs 6 cores.

It's like 3 months away for the last appreciable upgrade on the am4 socket. Whatever is around the corner would require a complete rebuild with new motherboard and overpriced ddr5 ram. So really not getting your point.

Folks tend to forget that the intels also include built-in graphics. Nothing hard core, but saves some nice coin for the non gamers among us.

For content creation this one is good and not a bank breaker. Also, a white theme if you like that. I believe it is a fanless x570 as well.

I would suggest this for cooling a 5950x. It is a bit massive, but very quiet and works extremely well for the price. It isn't too much more than a high end air cooler. Even the 5800 is going to make your stock cooler spin up all the time to annoying levels. I can't imagine what a 5950x will sound like on the stock cooler.
