Not trying to troll, anyone know when we'll start seeing wifi 6e routers? Is it worthwhile to wait?
I have the AX86U, which is a bit higher-end. I'm not super convinced it's worth waiting. I tried rocking the full 160Mhz width, but the thing is it cuts your transmit power to 25% of a 40Mhz width so signal strength goes to hell. I settled on 80Mhz, and there's plenty of channels for that if you have access to DFS on your router.

The advantage of 6e is more channels, but if it's still 25% power your range will still be terrible.

Even with just 80Mhz width, I benchmarked over 500Mbit/s on my iPhone. That's plenty in my book.
Range hasn't been improve too much mostly speed has been the talk. Although range may vary per router as usual. If range is your only concern mesh is the way to go

You can get the RT-AX82U for only $10 more at Best Buy, it's a no brainer which to get at that price point.
It's the same $199.99 bruh. Are you talking about the 15% off YMMV trick?

Waiting for a deal on RT-AX86U. I'll accept nothing less at this point.

I've got a 2 story 3,600 sq/ft house and a cheap Asus router covers all of it on the 5 Ghz band. It depends on the layout and materials of the house.

Generally, placing the router in the center of the home at the bottom floor is ideal for coverage.
2 story 3600 sq ft, I wouldn't accept anything less than a mesh system

You should look into ethernet over coaxial connection. Take a look at MOCA adapters. I use gocoax. I use these with a Wi-Fi mesh system

Thank you! Great info. I appreciate your knowledge.

It's not a trick, just hand them any networking gear to recycle, they give you a coupon you can use for any new router, even the one in op's thread for $160 - %15 = $136. See my receipt for the RT-AX82U:

As I said, it depends on placement and building construction. No connection issues anywhere in my house or out in the yard with a cheap router.

Mesh creates a bunch of data "pollution" with backhaul channels and can reduce overall speeds. Something I'd do as a last resort. I'd probably backhaul with ethernet if I did it.

Recently picked one of these up during the Office Depot deal (think it was the same price). Honestly had a lot of trouble with it initially. A few times a week all of my devices would say they couldn't reconnect because the password was "wrong". A router reboot would fix it each time. Also had dropouts and poor performance. Thought it was interference, but channel changes didn't help. Was on the latest firmware, too. Finally moved over to Merlin and haven't had an issue since. Will be keeping it, but didn't instill a whole lot of confidence in the stock firmware for me.

It's YMMV. You're supposed to buy a $100 home installation too. It may or may not work depending on the manager.

This was my experience. Mine dropped wifi every 3 hours. I installed Merlin and it dropped once a week. Finally returned it and getting the RT-AX82U.

ASUS RT-AX68U also has the broadcom chip, which equates to this router having AES on-chip support, for VPN performance is that right?
