If you're just looking for cheap & relatively good,
1: the HD 10 current version goes on sale for around $75-$99 often
2: the HD 10 older version is available for $74 now though compared to the new HD 10 sale price that's not that good of a discount.

Otherwise for an 8 inch fire HD, yeah, this is decent, but has a much worse (resolution etc) screen than the HD10, and half the processor cores, so if the price difference is like $20-30-$40 depending on which HD8 and HD10 one compares maybe the HD10 options are better for future proofing, better capabilities, etc.
Don't expect these to compete with ipads or samsung tablets.
These are just better alternative to the no-name trash Chinese tablets from aliexpress/wish/amazon.

If you have correct expectations, these are good. and for $55 vs original $80-100, this is a good gift option.
Why do people downvote the truth. Do not expect these to compete with ipad or samsung tablets. However, they are definitely MUCH better than no-name trash tablets, and you get a pretty decent support. Also you can trade them in for $10 + 25% off (is this still going on)

Non-tech person looking for something to play videos off of memory cards or external flash/ssd drives.
Do these fit the bill?

I can't believe how slow my 3gb hd10 is to switch apps or screen rotation and even a bit sluggish once in apps like web browsing. But at least it has a good screen once it gets going. I wouldn't want to use something slower with a worse screen if I can avoid it for around $25-30. I use regular android apps, like chrome, and nova launcher and xda fire toolbox to get rid of most amazon stuff.
Im in the same boat. Just want to be able to quickly stream live sports on it at this point 😫

Believe it or not, these have GoPro apps

So if you're using a tablet to check some email, watch some Netflix and store your GoPro recordings, this is a good tablet. It has all the basic stuff. But performance isn't that good.

Actually they currently offer $25+20% off a new tablet with trade in of our current 8th Gen fires on say the kids pro 8 tablets, probably the same for the HD10s

Personally not impressed with this tablet. It runs custom amazon OS which really limits its options. Also its slow as a 2 year old android from 2015. My grandma got one and I helped her set it up and after 5 minutes of using it I started thinking I've gotta get her something better.

As someone else said it compares to a no name chineese tablet. For the price its alittle underpreformance if u ask me. The new base ipad is 399. And it will last you for years until it breaks. I recently bought one for my brother and its quality. I know thats a big price change but the quality change is even better.

Plan for the charging port to fail and pay another $50+ to have it repaired locally. Amazon will not help you.

If I turn on my hd 8 or hd 10, and run it for say 10 minutes then I hit the SQUARE ICON, it will show around 10 apps are ON, carrying on and on until I CLOSE them DOWN! If I close all the background apps I am not currently using , it is zippy! Smilie

Now, say I didn't hit the SQUARE ICON for a week of daily use, I could have maybe 30-40 apps RUNNING in the background, since all those apps continue going in the background even if I turn off and then on the device!

Apple devices now close those background apps down, automatically, if you don't use them. Amazon should do what Apple does, and close the unused background apps down.

TEST what I am saying.

When anyone says the hd 8 or hd 10 is slow, I know why and they don't, yet.

p.s. There are other reasons the hd 8 or hd 10 could slow down. One is not doing a factory refresh every so often. It is the same with Windows 10/11, fresh install makes things zippy. Also, a slow down could be router issues/wifi issues.

Not sure how they stack up to eachother, but the non plus version is $44, plus 10% back in prime credit card rewards (vs the 5% on the 8plus). as far as I can tell, you are losing a gig of ram, and the wireless charging, which may or may not be a deal breaker for some.

Losing that 1gb of RAM is quite painful (in other words, what was a slow tablet is now a PAINFULLY slow tablet).

It's WELL worth it to spend the extra $11 for the speed increase alone (IMHO). But thanks for the info. Repped you. ✓

I'm still waiting for the HD 10 sale. Has anybody seen anything coming for Black Friday? It's like Amazon has everything on sale except for that one.

I have this Tablet. It's good for a smaller tablet that you don't care too much about. Great for media consumption and really easy to get access to the play store. I use mine for camping or short flights where I need to pack light. It's speedy enough and lasts a long time on a charge. Some older games even run decently. I paid around $75 and thought it was worth it. At $55 this is a bargain.

yes, it should play most video files off the microsd card. if it doesn't play a specific video because of the codec/format, it is easy enough to find a media play on the app store to accomodate it.

one thing to note is that it comes with amazon proprietary app store and not the google play store most people are accustomed to on android.

you can side load the google play store on it but beware there are always dangers of malicious software when sideloading apps you find on the web.

for something as simple as watching videos, you shouldn't need to do side load google play store or anything.

Fire hd 10 + fire toolbox is the answer

Check if your local Walmart has the ONN 8 pro tablets from last year available. Nearly all the stores in my area have large numbers of these marked down to between $20 and $30: https://brickseek.com/walmart-inv...=648267237

They're very similar in most spec to this fire tablet, but have an 8 core instead of a 4 core SoC, and 2gb of RAM instead of 3. Also they run pretty much standard Android, with the few Walmart additions (Walmart and Vudu apps) very easy to turn off or ignore.
