1: the HD 10 current version goes on sale for around $75-$99 often
2: the HD 10 older version is available for $74 now though compared to the new HD 10 sale price that's not that good of a discount.
Otherwise for an 8 inch fire HD, yeah, this is decent, but has a much worse (resolution etc) screen than the HD10, and half the processor cores, so if the price difference is like $20-30-$40 depending on which HD8 and HD10 one compares maybe the HD10 options are better for future proofing, better capabilities, etc.
These are just better alternative to the no-name trash Chinese tablets from aliexpress/wish/amazon.
If you have correct expectations, these are good. and for $55 vs original $80-100, this is a good gift option.

Do these fit the bill?
So if you're using a tablet to check some email, watch some Netflix and store your GoPro recordings, this is a good tablet. It has all the basic stuff. But performance isn't that good.
Actually they currently offer $25+20% off a new tablet with trade in of our current 8th Gen fires on say the kids pro 8 tablets, probably the same for the HD10s
As someone else said it compares to a no name chineese tablet. For the price its alittle underpreformance if u ask me. The new base ipad is 399. And it will last you for years until it breaks. I recently bought one for my brother and its quality. I know thats a big price change but the quality change is even better.

Now, say I didn't hit the SQUARE ICON for a week of daily use, I could have maybe 30-40 apps RUNNING in the background, since all those apps continue going in the background even if I turn off and then on the device!
Apple devices now close those background apps down, automatically, if you don't use them. Amazon should do what Apple does, and close the unused background apps down.
TEST what I am saying.
When anyone says the hd 8 or hd 10 is slow, I know why and they don't, yet.
p.s. There are other reasons the hd 8 or hd 10 could slow down. One is not doing a factory refresh every so often. It is the same with Windows 10/11, fresh install makes things zippy. Also, a slow down could be router issues/wifi issues.
Losing that 1gb of RAM is quite painful (in other words, what was a slow tablet is now a PAINFULLY slow tablet).
It's WELL worth it to spend the extra $11 for the speed increase alone (IMHO). But thanks for the info. Repped you. ✓

one thing to note is that it comes with amazon proprietary app store and not the google play store most people are accustomed to on android.
you can side load the google play store on it but beware there are always dangers of malicious software when sideloading apps you find on the web.
for something as simple as watching videos, you shouldn't need to do side load google play store or anything.

Fire hd 10 + fire toolbox is the answer

They're very similar in most spec to this fire tablet, but have an 8 core instead of a 4 core SoC, and 2gb of RAM instead of 3. Also they run pretty much standard Android, with the few Walmart additions (Walmart and Vudu apps) very easy to turn off or ignore.
