Well I don't think anyone looks at what the cost is for a "disc" but rather what you pay for what's on the disc.

Clearly none of content on the other franchise discs you mentioned are on ANY same level as LOTR!

You almost always pay more for better quality, this is definitely at the top of that level!

Not likely given there are two cuts (six discs total) in this box set. At some point they may separate the cuts and that could bring the price down. I'm guessing their nest dip will be to release a set with as many extras and both cuts. This will get a re-release again and again so it might be worth waiting since these aren't exactly hard movies to come by.
