Is a pour over a french press? Can you make espresso in it? I thought espresso had to have pressure?
Generally, decent coffee depends on the type and consistency of the grind, and freshness of the bean. K-cups don't do very well in either of those. Pressure or not is just extraction method. You can give poorly grinded coffee from a 10 bucks Mr Coffee grinder to a pressurized basket from a 500 dollar espresso machine, and it would still make a pretty lousy coffee, but it is still technically coffee with caffeine in it; turn it into latte with some milk and honestly, it still kind of works and alot of people would drink it.
It really depends on what people are looking for. Ramen from a good ramen place in Japan is incredible, but you don't always have the luxury to get it whenever you want. And sometimes maybe you just want to have an instant noodle.
Have you tried a Vietnamese coffee maker? it makes more concentrated coffee. I guess you know theres no way to get espresso level pressure with any pour over like device. There are manual espresso makers - not sure how convenient good they are.
I find making a phin cup is a much stronger flavor and caffeine than other methods. Typically brew using a Italian moka pot on stove, which is strong, but pour-over phin blows it away.
I bought this last week to try and upgrade my parents old senseo machine. They love that thing. Find the 30% off coupon and also stacked Amex 50% Amazon purchase (mistake).
The machine gets here, I unbox, read the manuals (yes, I love manuals), and start setting it up. They ask that you flush hot water through its first cycle and all goes well.
I put in the first pod, close the lid, add filtered water, and press the lungo. Nothing.
Ok, well, user error, right? I push the water tank further down and try again. Lungo. Only a small amount of coffee comes through. I think that's weird since I watched videos and all. Should be more. I am a new pod and try espresso this time. Same thing.
Odd. So I open the pod chamber that holds the spent pods, and viola. All the water. It was either not being pushed through, or didn't make the spout after being pushed through pod.
Mind you, I probably got a lemon. But idk. Maybe they have this issue. The lungo and espresso that were able to come out correctly were extremely bitter and just not good.
I wanted to love this machine for my parents, but I'm returning it. Learned to never use an Amex promo on something you don't love already.
Cheers!

- DeLonghi Stilosa - $87 [amazon.com]
There isn't any functionally superior machine under $300 new. All of the cheap Delonghi machines have a steel boiler & an ULKA pump inside. They can make "real" espresso. [youtube.com]- DeLonghi Non-pressurized basket - $15 [appliancefactoryparts.com]
These machines only come with pressurized baskets now which are designed for pre-ground/drip-ground coffee. A non-pressurized basket is necessary for "real" espresso. It's probably best to buy from a parts store rather than Amazon because there are many cheap Chinese copies.- Enzoo Conical Burr Grinder - $42 [amazon.com]
The features are impressive at this price point: steel conical burrs with a metal housing, low RPM motor, lots of grind settings, designed for dosing directly into a portafilter. Quality control and longevity aren't guaranteed, of course, but grinders from proven brands are more than $100, $300 with similar features. Reviews suggest applying loctite or thread tape to screws above the burrs so that they don't fall in, and make sure that the plastic funnel under the burr is aligned correctly, isn't rubbing.- DeLonghi Stilosa - $87 [amazon.com]

I'm going to give it a try
Yes oddly enough I literally only used it with chicory coffee and condensed milk, but maybe I'll try using regular coffee. I'm trying to copy the shakes iced espresso drink at Starbucks right now.
I also just found out about the $30 aeropress, which supposedly makes more concentrated coffee/pseudo espresso as well

it would've been cool if this device used loose coffee grinds and not a pod.
Perhaps, for some people using pods are convenient and not messy, but then coffee out of pods versus freshly ground coffee, there's a big difference in taste. The latter being so much better
