I think you may have been reading reviews for the Blu-ray version, not the 4k UHD version. The reviews I've seen on this have been outstanding.

So, for those that are extra passionate about the versions and releases of this trilogy, which set is "the" set to buy? My kids are almost old enough to go through these, and I hate buying media 2-3x. TIA

These 4k releases do use DNR. It personally doesn't bother me in this case, and, in general, most people are not going to care about it. But it is there and it's something that people who are more in enthusiast camp don't like.

I can play the waiting game as long as they want until there is a real price drop for 4K before considering the upgrade. The prices now are just pure greed. Eventually, the market of people paying a premium price for this is going to dry up and they'll either have to consider a significant price drop or just sit on dead stock that doesn't move.

Basically a good 4K player like the Panasonic 420 can upscale the BD disc so well you could be happy enough to wait for a better deal.

The audio on the BD is reference quality so unless you have a proper object based setup you can easily be happy with that also.

This is the biggest scam the music and movie studios are perpetrating. They cry to the courts and make a big fuss that they're not selling you a copy of the song/movie, so you can't backup, loan out, sell, play at public gatherings, etc. movies and music any way you want. But that they're selling you a license which only lets you view/listen to it in private under the conditions they set.

But then when they release a new version, suddenly they want you to pay full price for it as if it were a totally new copy. They first stumbled upon this model when they switched from records to cassettes, then to CDs. And they're continuing it with digital distribution, even though digital completely eliminates any justification for charging you full price (with the non-digital formats, at least you were getting physical materials which had a fixed cost).

They need to make up their minds. Either it's a copy or it's a license. If it's a copy, then they can charge full price for all new versions. But you can sell, loan, rent out, play at large gatherings, backup, copy it as you see fit (just can't sell the copies). If it's a license, then they can prevent you from doing these things. But licensing the song/movie means you're automatically entitled to newer digital versions which are operating under the same copyright. Since you've already licensed that copyrighted work.

The software industry at least gets it right. If you own the previous version, you can get the latest version for a lower upgrade price.
