This is a great drive, been using it for a couple weeks now. All my Steam games are loaded on and others from Ubisoft online. Loads Far Cry 6 in seconds and MS FS2020 loads with all visuals maxed out no stutters at all.
Picked it up when the Samsung site had it for about $237 after all discounts a couple of weeks ago.

I've had this a couple months on a z590 board and have no problem getting advertised read speeds. Write speeds are a little behind but still impressive.

Why would you wish that you needed something?

Because they would cost $1000 and people are not willing to pay it. Optane performed better than any of these NAND flash units, as latency is much more important than raw transfer speeds but no one was willing to pay the premium.

Ya, a little competition would of saved me from the $800 Seagate 4tb drive bill I paid.

People are paying 1000+ for the 8tb drives from Sabrent and others.
Few people purchase Optane. Poor power efficiency. Not enough storage in solo or hybrid forms. Poor large file copying.

Also Gen 4 PCIE means even closer performance without the caching cost.

Poor file copying is a stretch. Optane performed well, and would murder a cached nand flash that ended up dipping into the TLC/QLC if the files were actually "large". Only the older NAND MLC drives even kept reasonable performance with large files.

Gen4 just makes the medium file copying faster, which I think is rather unimportant for the consumer use case. The low queue depth performance of optane is notably better and shows real world speed increases which the gen3->4 drives do not.

Poor energy efficiency is not a typical concern in the form factors available (not usually M.2), but it is worse. Endurance of Optane is also an order of magnitude better than even the best NAND flash, let alone the cheap QLC that is sold to consumers. But as mentioned, cost was high, but the technology is superior.

Intel killed their consumer Optane line. I think they're focusing on laptop OEMs now, but there's not a lot of uptake. And that's right where power usage matters. A watt or two adds up on an ultrabook, especially with idle power use.

NAND MLC 4 or 8TB PCIE4 is exactly what I want. At which point Optane adds little, especially since you can't get it hybrid with such drives.

I also wish that 13" ultrabooks had dual NVME, but they all seem to just have one slot. Have to go 14" or larger to get dual. SAD!

Man I know this is a good deal but it's still too expensive for my blood. I'm waiting for the $230 range... Gonna be a long wait.

My PS5 is whispering "that's the one!"
My wallet is telling the PS5, that the 1TB will be good enough.

Meanwhile over at Activision COD patch team….. "LoL @ 1TB SSD drives."
