This is a deal that pops up from time to time, and seems to go on sale at Best Buy for $0.99 pretty regularly. Normal price is $9.99 apparently. I only saw this deal because someone posted it within the free $5 Best Buy voucher thread.

This seems like a really good deal for having either Verizon or T-Mobile service for as low as $10 a month. With the included sim card, you can activate pretty much any unlocked phone (check compatibility below). Up to 3 months free of service.

Our personal use case is that we were looking to get a phone line for our daughter as an emergency phone for when she's at school/sports. Had an old iPhone lying that was compatible. $30 credit that it comes with will be good for 3 months of unlimited talk and text, and she can use data when she is within Wifi range.

They also have a pretty good referral plan apparently, $50 credit for first referral, and $25 credit for each subsequent referral. If I can get some of her friends to sign up, she could potentially have free/cheap service for a bit. They also each get $25 for signing up using a referral, so it's win-win.

A few things I found out reading up on Reddit. Apparently, the current SIM card that comes from Best Buy is only for T-Mobile X3 service. If you want the V1 (Verizon) sim card, you have to request it from their customer service. Apparently, you can find the right rep and they'll send it to you for free.

It's hard to cancel. You have to contact them and go back and forth to get them to cancel. And if you miss your end of month date, they don't prorate the next month, so you have to pay full month if they take their time to cancel

That's bad to hear. I'm still new to it. It took a bit from the time my phone started working until the phone actually showed as "activated" on their website, so I could not disable the data. Unfortunately, once you use 1.1MB, it automatically charges you $5 (so $15 total) for the month. Luckily, their customer service seems pretty good, and they credited me $5 without much effort via chat.

Hopefully the service is good enough that I won't have to cancel anytime soon for this one line, but from my limited experience with them, they were pretty easy to deal with.

Does it require a CC to activate? Looking to use just for a few weeks for international visitors.

Not sure what your needs are for the emergency phone, but just in case it is helpful, I'd recommend taking a look at the advice tree on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContra...rate_plan/

It does, but this is post-paid so your first bill won't come for a month. But as long as you cancel it before you use up all your $30 free credit, they shouldn't charge your credit card. If you're creative with your referral sign-ups, you might be able to get service for almost no cost if it's only for a month or two. Good luck.

If I needed a number to port-in for another deal would this be a good choice? Is it easy to port-out the number? Would this close the account? Any advice appreciated.

it was pretty easy for me. i just got into my account settings i think to look at my port out information and then that's it. once it ports out, ur "account" aka ur line is closed with them but ur online account to login to check is still there

my experience is different from above.

I got some $0.99 (mentioned $30 credit for this sim) deals before. My purpose is get a cheap new # for porting. Only used 1, still have 2 on hand bcos not easy for Ting Sim & service.

1. it got to use CC to sign up and activate, tried several prepaid Visa, Mastercard gift card with a lot of balance , all not working. Even credit card, still spend a lot of effort since sometimes it show up "error code" for unknown reason and need to change another CC again and again.

2. it is postpaid, so when attach CC there, it won't be charged right away. I port out within couple of days after activation, they charged CC while next month coming -- charged to my credit card $13.xx

---> I assumed porting out is service/plan ended, it is unnecessary to call for cancellation.

---> also, there is $30 credit there, at least it can be offset the 1st month $13.xx, but it is not. contact Ting Rep, they said $30 will start to be applied 2rd month, not for 1st month. It might be correct. Since there is very tiny word on the back of Sim package "$30 credit will be applied on second billing"

if comparing to Tracfone, it is easier to pay $15 plan to get a # to port. While porting out, automatically cancelled. Tracfone won't bother u or charged CC anymore. Instead of spending a lot of efforts to contact ting Rep for future account and CC issued for just saving $2 or $3 dollors

What is time frame need to activate it after purchase? 3 months or the date print on the card?

I have successfully activated SIMs I bought 2 years prior. They have to be X3 (TMo) or V1 (Verizon) SIMs though. I have some old X1 SIMs and Ting won't activate those.

Any way to tell which SIM this deal is for? X3 (TMo) or V1 (Verizon)? I did this deal 3 times, each time I got something else. X1, X3, V1. I prefer the V1 SIM as T-Mobile's coverage is a joke. Their map in is a blatant lie.

Don't know if X1 sim causing problem to activate while I tried some of my credit cards and got a lot error code and cannot go through.

if using V1 verison Sim which might be verizon network, is it eligible for future Visible port # deal?

thanks

Not sure if this is the case for all, but I had about 20 of these kits that I had picked up from both Target and Best Buy; recently I tried to activate and ran into issues which by contacting customer service, I found out that they have phased out the older kits that had the two Sims X1 & V1.

Apparently they now have new kits that work, and they sent me some of those.

Fwiw, it's possible if you experience errors at final stages of activation that you received Old stock and you won't be able to use them unless you contact CS through chat to have them send you out new ones. Make sure they don't forget to apply the credit to your account for use with new kits when they arrive.
