The reason it gets a bad wrap is because it isn't designed for budget TVs. The OS is a memory hog. Which all of these budget TVs don't have the on board ram to keep up with it and it results in the Home Screen lagging and pausing and every once in a while freezing and needing reset the TV.
Once you're in an app like Netflix or hbo there is no freezing. It's just the Home Screen. People flip over it because they buy these $300 TVs and expect them to work like the $2300 version.
I have the 65 in hisense that I got for $250 a few years back and while the tv studders every once in awhile (3 times a month or so) I've only had it completely freeze once.
I like the os feel and experience it gives.
Manufacturers are delivering lowest cost and higher cost options, they are not in control of your choice on this matter.

On the other hand I have last year's Hisense H8G with Android TV and it works great.
I think the upper tier tv's from any manufacturer is more likely to run the OS fine.

Do you live near a Microcenter?..if so they have some refurbished LG C1s in 55 ,65 and 77 that people seemed to be very happy with
Looks like an expensive/higher-end model going by build quality/stand. I bought this after buying my son the newer but cheaper model from Costco, and was floored by how good the picture was on his for the price.

Back in December I price matched and got one and ended up for $643 at BB.
I won't do having a TV shipped to me anymore. I went that route twice before and had minor but unacceptable damage. . . one time the screen was separating at an outer edge and wasn't obvious right away.
The short of is that I'd rather spend $43 more from a box store that is 2 miles away if I have to return it and get another.
After +6 months with the U8G we are well pleased for our use with streaming, movies and broadcast network TV off our garage attic antenna.
As others have said, picture quality on this TV is outstanding and matches or exceeds anything from the Samsung, Sony or LG in the $1,200 to $1,500 price range.
Are TVs in the mid to low priced range perfect? NO . .. you will find quirks in all of them depending on your use (gaming for instance) or if you do not understand how to make proper settings and just start tweaking away with no understanding.
