The reason it gets a bad wrap is because it isn't designed for budget TVs. The OS is a memory hog. Which all of these budget TVs don't have the on board ram to keep up with it and it results in the Home Screen lagging and pausing and every once in a while freezing and needing reset the TV.
Once you're in an app like Netflix or hbo there is no freezing. It's just the Home Screen. People flip over it because they buy these $300 TVs and expect them to work like the $2300 version.
I have the 65 in hisense that I got for $250 a few years back and while the tv studders every once in awhile (3 times a month or so) I've only had it completely freeze once.
I like the os feel and experience it gives.
Manufacturers are delivering lowest cost and higher cost options, they are not in control of your choice on this matter.

The current firmware/software has fixed most or all of the major issues I've had.
Previous software was pretty bad and really detracts from the initial out of box experience.
Overall it is a decent TV for the features you get.
My panel definitely suffers from dirty screen effect or grey uniformity issues, but I can live it. There are trade offs to be expected for this feature set at this price point.
I'm not a fan of Android TV, the built-in Google assistant is pretty invasive but if you're into that then I guess it's ok. I just avoid that and use streaming devices.

Gaming VRR is essential. Watch a lot of sports. Frankly it shouldn't suck at anything.
Yup. I will never buy another Vizio. Had two Ms and both times their updates ended up chugging the OS, and their remotes are cruddy. As a budget tv, I had no big complaints about the picture quality but, geez, that OS can turn any good day into a bad one.

Do you live near a Microcenter?..if so they have some refurbished LG C1s in 55 ,65 and 77 that people seemed to be very happy with
I'm actually VERY lucky to live near a Micro Center. I used to live in Guam and make a point to go there when I came through the LA area. But now I live 20 minutes away.
I'll keep the C1 line in mind. Thanks.
LG C1 55" is down to $1000, so if you want perfection it's getting cheaper…
The upgrade to a 10 bit panel and bright enough for proper HDR will be a welcome improvement over your old plasma.
If you're still looking, they added me new delivery options in my area.
