Traded my 3a xl for the $300 trade-in and sold the free buds on eBay. Made this a crazy deal. Otherwise, I would have prolly looked into other phones.
Turn off the 5G unless I want to use it for some reason, keeps the phone cool.
Initially, had the unlock greyed out like most but after the June update, I factory reset the phone, went thru setup without sim, and did not turn on the wifi till after "preparing phone" ended. Then enabled dev mode and it was ok, then copied the old phone over, rebooted then put the sim in. I'm using Mint mobile if that matters.

You can Google search and you'll find it's a very common issue. And yes, i sent it in as phone was only a few months old and always in a case since day one. After two weeks, their 3rd party repair shop said it was because physical damage (once again, phone was mint, they were just taking payments for estimating and saying that to not actually have to do any work - great scam actually...) Google wanted like $400 to repair then, which on Reddit I've seen where ppl did pay for repair and it happened again. I got mine preorder and one of the first to receive, maybe they fixed later batches?

$400 for repair, yikes, I paid $450 new on launch. I just googled and see a handful of post on XDA and Reddit, I wouldn't consider that widespread.

For me I have very low expectations for Android phones, but it's more about how much better Android is for productivity/browsing the web/just using a phone quickly than iOS. I've spent most of the past 10 years on iOS, currently on a 13 Pro Max, but I desperately miss how fast browsing is, the AI-powered news and suggested reading algorithms, the first-class-citizenry of Google Assistant, and the accuracy and quality of speech to text and swipe typing vs. iOS. I keep hoping iOS will get better, and my gf and all female friends are going to give me shit about the green text bubbles, but Android is just so much more powerful for getting things done quickly... that I ordered one. We'll see how much the hardware issues bug me.

You sound like a focus group alphabet bot.

Keep in mind the Visible is not compatible (yet) (with my 6A from google store)
(even though they sell theirs, their EIAN number check fails on this phone and CSR has no way of circumventing it)
(I expect them to update their stupid database)

Coming from a 4a (non-5G). Purchased with the $300 trade-in credit, so I spent about $200 out of pocket (including a clear case). After one week...

Pros (that I've noticed):
- OS upgrades until 2024 and security updates until 2026
- Much bigger battery
- Better camera specs (I haven't exercised this too much)
- IP67
- Seems smoother, but my 4a could probably benefit from a factory reset
- No dedicated fingerprint sensor (I don't do biometrics, so I prefer to lose that dirt magnet)
- 5G (though I don't actually notice much difference in practice)

Cons:
- Bigger phone (I didn't need a bigger phone but a bigger screen is nice; net negative for me)
- Feels cheaper (hollow sound when I tap on the screen)
- No headphone jack (it's a nice to have but not a deal-breaker anymore)

That's all that comes to mind atm. I'm maybe not a typical user, but I figured atypical feedback might be of use. Overall I'm happy I upgraded with the deal (included free pixel buds), but I probably would've waited for 7a otherwise.

I had problems with the fingerprint unlock at first, but then I retrained it more carefully by holding the phone the way I would normally unlock it and followed the instructions more closely this time and it works great.

On a sidenote has the untoggle-able grayed out bootloader unlock button (under developer options) been resolved yet? Solely serving as my backup I eventually need the the calyxos rom (once available for this phone) to be flashable.

As per actual use for this phone I can't comment more than what I use it for. It was replacing my reliable pixel 3a (purchased on ebay for $42 two years ago priced as a cracked screen when all it had was some barely noticeable screen edge bleed when off.)

Being that it's running stock only android 12 right now the phone was literally unboxed, turned on & then tossed to the side within 15 minutes. The most anti-climatic unboxing I've had in awhile.

Currently for my uses as a backup it's barely adequate I guess?

My quick cons: It's slightly heavier than the 3a
the fingerprint reader is unreliable(but I feel not as bad as it's made out to be. Unless coming from a top-tier flagship?)

Pros- good screen to size ratio
good pocketable sized phone.
No noticeable lag.
5g

Given the $300 trade-in value offered for that 3a I felt I just had to bit.
As per my use of a backup phone it's pretty much a downgrade but that new 5yr support was my clincher.

edit - they fixed the bootloader toggle via an update. Nice. Now to sit in a drawer & wait on the calyxos crew.

That's a phenomenal deal! I just found out about the trade in and am kicking myself because I have a 3a. I know this is wishful thinking but hope they run this trade in deal again when the pixel 7 releases.

2.) Switched to Google Fi. Yes, I know it's the same as T-Mobile, but it has been significantly more stable for some reason.
Also try dual (e+physical) sim if on Fi: https://support.google.com/fi/ans...compatible
