Great product. I use mine almost every day for streaming, Steam streaming and Kodi. Much better for kodi than firetv if you have a large library.

Its interesting to see most positive comments are from people who own this and use it daily. The nay sayers look at the spec on paper and call it crap or they dont have a use case for such a powerful player.

Looking for something that will do 3D and HD audio passthrough. Series X can't handle 3D signal to projector. Anyone have any experience with that?

I have two of the 2017 version. It does almost everything. All apps are snappy and streams at 4k hdr and dolby atmos with no problem. I also use the kodi media player to stream locally from my nas. It plays almost all video format. If this new one goes any lower I'd buy one.

How well does this work as a Plex Server if I want to connect an external drive with large media files? My old QNAP NAS just chugs, but have heard mixed things about the Shield as a Plex Media Server.
I can run one 4k video and 6 1080 videos without problems through Plex and an external hdd connected to a router

If you want to use any streaming app and also use your local media in full quality (meaning blueray UHD remux with HD audio) using Plex/Emby/JF the Shield is pretty much the only option, hence why its remained unchanged since 2015 (the 2019 refresh was all software), priced so high and still sells,.

if however you are ok with using 2 devices, there are better options -

1. for streaming - get a Fire 4kK/Cube/Google Chromecast/Roku Ultra
2. for local media from your NAS - get an AMLogic streaming box, put CoreElec on it for much better AV quality

This is only for those who want the most flexible setup and highest quality. For most people the Shield is enough.

Cons: I do think its overpriced. Nvidia gimps the non pro version deliberately (limiting to 32 bits and other sw hacks) meaning no one buys it even though its perfectly capable. They could've all the features in 2019 to the old device, but didn't.

For those of us who've owned a Shield for a while, its the same story every year - will they introduce a new version? And every year its the same. The Shield is 2015 era hardware and is quite possibly the longest supported CE device thats still considered the best in class.

Its pretty interesting - if Amazon/Google added HD audio support all of a sudden the Fire/Google devices would be a competitor, as they have all the hardware. But they don't care about that market, they are selling to those who only stream.
is the ai upscaling worth upgrading?

This has ended up being my most loved gadget. The upscaling really works, and use it for Kodi/Jellyfin/local game streaming. It can be finicky, with some Bluetooth issues and audio bugs, but it is such an insanely capable device that it's worth it
What are some of the Bluetooth issues you are having?

it works pretty well for 720p/1080p. Depends a lot on the quality of source material for 480p, doesn't work below that.
There are many videos on youtube on this that can help you decide.

Mine freezes like it works bur everytime it turns on my remote won't work on it for 1 minute even tho stuff is moving in the shield
Same thing has recently happened to mine. I was assuming it was the remote. The original remote died so I've been using my LG tv remote. It had worked fine but a few months back I started having the issue you are having. I don't remember an update coming thru but maybe it did. I also don't think it is as fast as it used to be but they just be me thinking that because it is several years old. I keep hoping they will come out with a new one with an upgraded cpu but I've been waiting a long time. I kept hearing last year that they would have to come out with a new one because the cpu they were using was going to stop being manufactured at the end of 2021. Either they had a big supply on hand or that didn't happen.
I also have had weird things happening lately. Just a few days ago nothing would play in any of the streaming apps. You could get to the screen to choose what you wanted to play but then just get a blank screen. It was the same in every app including Hulu, Netflix, Apple tv and Disney+. Rebooting didn't help. I finally decided to just unplug it and let it sit for about 20 minutes and then everything worked fine.

I assume you are referring to HD audio in videos? I can't get it to play HD audio thru Amazon Music. If I play an HD audio song it will show the quality of the track and then it shows what it is actually playing and it is always less quality. I've got it set to play the highest quality in the settings. Last time I researched it, I could only find a few forums where it was discussed and they said it was a limitation of the shield. That never made sense to me because if it can do dolby atmos I would think it should do a HD stereo file.

I don't use it as a Plex Server but the main reason I own it is because of the usb ports. I have a 1tb external NVME drive I hook up to mine and use VLC to play all my video files. Works great. I just hate the last major update where it puts all those useless directories on the drive the first time you use it.

I haven't used Amazon Music, I mean HD audio in movies. Have you tried maybe a FireStick? From google search it seems Shield might be limited to 48 khz/16 bit

That is what I've read. I don't understand how it can decode such demanding audio from movies but can't do it from a music file. It can't be a hardware limitation and I would think the underlying software isn't the issue. I also hate how the apps are different on every device. Amazon Music shows the bitrate it is playing on the shield but if I use the app on the LG tv it doesn't show that info so I have no idea if it is in HD or not.
