I'm curious what would be a better upgrade path from a 5800X, a 5800X3D or this 5900X?
I'm looking to upgrade from a 3600. Leaning 5800X3D because I have a sffpc, and this one pulls the least wattage [youtu.be] while still being a gaming powerhouse.

Technically, I do more productivity--mostly Adobe Suite, which doesn't even really tax my 3600, tbh--but I still want to upgrade for future gaming, and a few extra cores won't hurt anything either. If I was running Blender workloads constantly, then 5900x might be more on my radar.

I have to say, however, that if I were in your shoes and happily using a 5800X for my work/gaming, I probably wouldn't be able to justify dropping $300 on either.

Fair enough. That's an understandable perspective and you might be right 👍🏽.

13600K is cheaper ($300 on Amazon) and faster.

I'm always skeptical of any ranking involving AMD stuff on this website. What's with every AMD "review" from CPUPro in the conclusion section slandering and fearmongering over anyone daring to buy an AMD product? The author seems very biased...

There are tons of Intel and nGreedia trolls and shills and mods are making it convenient for them. Don't care what people buy but let's not mislead people with bias information.

Decency is very subjective- you have to be more specific about your use case and budget, and atx/matx/itx at the minimum.
Good point. ATX, under $200. Video encoding and light gaming.

Any suggestions on a decent mobo to pair with this?
Since this platform is now end of life get a x570. It will give you some room to upgrade later. Gigabyte X570 Aorus series has been fantastic for me.

problem though is changing motherboard will require basically reinstalling the OS. Reprehensible for those of us looking to max out our currrent MB w/o all that work

There is no more upgrade room, the 7000 series uses a completely different socket. 5000 series is the last compatible cpu.

Until the 13600K I would have said go Ryzen. However, this is the first value CPU from Intel I've seen in a long time. Every review shows it beating the 5900X.
