14TB - $200 a couple days ago ($14.29/TB)
18TB - $280 = $80 for 4TB more ($15.56/TB) or 40% more $ than the 14TB for 29% more storage

Just a heads up to people purchasing this to shuck, my 18TB drive was a white label WD180EDGZ that required the 3.3v pin trick to be detected by BIOS. YMMV though on what internal drive is used.

My 2 Chase cards offer 10% off BB purchase (no minimum $), so 14tb $180 ($12.86/tb), 18tb $252 ($14/tb), and 20tb $297 ($14.85/tb). 14tb's are the cheapest unless the drives in them are inferior to those in 18tb's or 20tb's. Do you know if the internal drives are the same in terms of speed and quality across the three models? I think I'll get 1 14tb and 1 18tb. Since they are Chase CCs, I may also get 5% cashback through PayPal.

Since you mentioned wanting to be safe, the short answer here is yes. There's a number of variables involved depending on your particular situation and setup, but, generally speaking, you want fault tolerance and ransomware protection, as well as both on-site and off-site backups. If you're planning for future data growth and only have 2TB now, the 18TB posted here doesn't have to be an "instead of", but more of an "as well as" the smaller drives. The key question is always going to be, what is your safety budget? The costs here can vary widely.

A common setup for someone like yourself, would be multiple, smaller drives in a fault-tolerant RAID array, which would then sync to both an external drive like the 18TB here, as well as an off-site location such as the cloud or a secondary, physical backup in another location.

All devices in your house > NAS or similar > external backup > off-site backup.

If your NAS dies, or runs into problems during a rebuild, you have the external. If your house burns down, or the NAS and external get stolen, you have the off-site backup. Lots of different ways to go about it (Google something like "3-2-1 3-2-1-1-0 4-3-2 backup" if you want to go down the rabbit hole), but, ultimately, you always want to have a minimum of one, verified copy of your data off-site.

What's the warranty on those? New ones come with 5 year warranty, but Amazon recertified ones only come with 90 days.

certainly, goHardDrive and a number of others have been mentioned in prev threads... it's fine as long as folks are aware it's possible with "renewed" HDD's and run thru their tests
