Is there anything more, or less, that this ROG unit offers compared to the general AC86U?
I assume it's only a design look difference - and even with that, is there anything better (or worse) in the design of this compared to the regular AC2900?
The general AC86U units seemed to have a history of overheating which can cause premature failure, in researching these units (comments, reviews, etc.). Many people add fans to them, internally or externally, to solve that.
Jumping up to AX ASUS routers is a big uplift in price, with most people really not able yet to utilize AX speeds. The AX68U may be better with AX for $140, but the AC68U units might be better for other things (distance, etc.).
There are other issues to consider then when looking at the ASUS line beyond AX vs. AC. The AC2900 AC86U router line has been extremely popular. I just wish it didn't have the heat issues.
It's on Small Net Builder. It was announced in October IIRC so it's pretty recent.

What, it has some built in QOS software for certain games?

I just bought an ac86u a while back. There have been no overheating issues. I've got to think that was an early build problem that has been fixed.
