Get a dedicated A53 1.8ghz CPU (Stronger than the A7 SoC in AX82U) and 3x3 2.4G.

If 3rd party firmware doesn't matter to you, you can't go wrong.

Do you have a recommendation on what would be the best ASUS access point? pfSense is doing the routing, but in need a new access point. Have had good luck with ASUS in the past and figure should stay with it. Was looking at the AX1800 trying to stay under $100, but would like Merlin support incase change the setup in the future. It seems like that leaves RT-AC2900 as the option (Amazon Warehouse < $70) but not sure if it is a mistake to get a non-AX router at this point?
I read your posts on the thread https://slickdeals.net/f/16236100-asus-ac2900-dual-band-gigabit-wifi-gaming-router-rt-ac86u-99-99 and you seem very knowledgeable on ASUS routers so I thought I would ask on a more current thread.
Thank you!

The AC86U/GT-AC2900 are AC class, but 4x4 config.
I can't speak for your environment, but the entry 2x2 AX stuff doesn't work well for me. The only upgrade from 4x4 AC is 4x4 AX.

I apologize if it is a stupid question, but what is the different RT-AC2900 and GT-AC2900?
Would you buy a 4x4 AC right now or pay the premium for a 4x4 AX?
Thank you!

Relatively 160mhz AX routers actually have true 160mhz broadcast, though 80mhz usually holds more range due to SNR advantages. The trade off is throughput generally speaking.
And it depends on pricing and ISP speed... If you're sub 400mbps, a GT-AC2900 on sale for $90 USD is a very good value
IF you're @ 600mbps+ you're better off investing into an AX class 4x4 router..
A router like GT-AC2900 will hard limit around 550-650mbps over WIFI on 2x2 client...where AX class stuff will go up to 700-800mbps on a similar 80mhz bonding config via 2x2 client.
The AX86S was on sale for the longest time via best buy for $180 USD -15% router trade in, but that deal seems to be over. You could technically price match amazon at a local store and trade in old router to get it for $153 + Tax.
Any other good ASUS 4x4 router is around $250+.. AX86U.. GT-AX6000 etc.

Thank you for the details! ISP is sloooow, so unfortunately that is not speed a factor right now. Do not have much network cable so most things, even desktops, are on WIFI though.
To ensure I am following, as you recommend against using 160mhz on the GT-AC2900 is the only real difference between it and RT-AC2900 the RGB LED's? This router will be in a closet, so no point in caring about looks either.
Is the AX86U better than the AX86S? Amazon Warehouse does have the AX86S for ~$140, though still not sure it is worth double a Warehouse AC2900?

The AX86S will continue to get updates for a bit longer, through the RAM use is high with current firmware.
AX86U is better in regards that it supports a 2.5G connection and has a quadcore variant of the same type of A53 CPU in AX86S and older models like GT-AC2900 and AC86U.
Also has 1GB of ram vs 512MB.
But the performance of the two are similar, granted my AX86S copy that I tried did better for range for some odd reason.. Tolerances.. generally.
Id be concerned about buying a used router as the warranty is tied to serial number.. IE: If that router was returned 6 months ago, chances are there's only around 1-1.5 year warranty left on it.
If you buy through best buy, warranty is tied to purchase date. ASUS + them have a special deal.
I would argue the AX86S is a better long term option and if you have a plethora of AX clients.
AX86U is being replaced by AX86U PRO with even newer hardware.. but thats $300 USD. GT-AX6000 is a better value currently and has a better 2.4G radio and 2x 2.5G ports.

Ok, thank you for the additional details! I will see if I can hold out for an AX deal...
It looks like the AX86S $180 deal is back at Best Buy.
Could likely price match amazons 180 USD price point and trade in a random 10 year old router to get the price down to $153 plus tax.
I think that price is fair vs market options.
