I think the strike price on this is $130-140. I know a lot of people would disagree. The problem is the Zen 4 CPU's are getting the 3D v-cache in a little more than a week. That means the pricing pressure on the 5800x3D CPU will be headed down as well. AMD is masterful at selling old stuff. At $150, I think they get a lot of takers.

Worth it from a 5600x? I'm thinking no.
From my research, I don't think so. I returned my 5600x to get this (inside return window), I think it's better bang for your buck, but only if buying from scratch I think

Kman made a great point too , something a dumb person like me might miss Stick Out Tongue .. if you check the product description it says it does not come with a CPU cooler so make sure you order one too along with the processor (which I guess makes you pay more than the $14 difference I mentioned earlier unless you already have a cpu cooler around that you're confident will do a good job cooling the CPU .. otherwise a quick google search brought this up

https://www.windowscentral.com/be...en-7-5800x

though looking at the price tags for the coolers my reply was "ouch" Stick Out Tongue ... anyone have any recommendations for a cheaper cpu cooler that will do the job? (if I'm not mistaken I think Kman is talking about the spire stock cooler that came with his amd ryzen 5 2600x processor when he bought it ... but any recommendations for someone who doesn't have one of these spire coolers that won't break the bank? Smilie )

Also .. and please bear in mind I'm not an expert on CPU coolers by any means Smilie just posting what I'm seeing online.. I saw this amazon listing for the amd wraith coolers that I THINK (not sure but I think) are the ones that come stock with some amd ryzen CPU's

https://www.amazon.com/Stealth-Connector-Aluminum-Heatsink-3-93-Inch/dp/B07MFMFL7R/ref=sr_1_1?keywor... [amazon.com]

and one amazon reviewer said quote

" James David Drake

Used for a Ryzen 5 2600 for years with no issues what so ever. I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 5800x and bought another wraith just because lazy and didn't want to both clean the old wraith and apply new thermal paste. After installation my CPU temps could not be controlled with this. I'm talking 92 degrees under moderate load. I did reseat with no changes. Case open and a box fan aimed into case, still 92 degrees. I switched it out with a moderately priced cooler master and temps are now manageable at around 70 degrees under moderate load.
Pros: good for older cpus
Cons: had for newer cpus "
The 5700X runs cooler than my 2600X at 65TDP vs 95TDP, and the Wraith Spire has been cooling it just fine. So get a good cooler but you don't need anything too powerful as it would be wasted even if you moderately overclock. I'm no expert on coolers but you shouldn't have to spend more than $20-$30 (actual experts please correct me if I'm wrong). Do some research, look at the better sites like Tom's and Linus whatsishame, and you should be fine. Make sure to get decent thermal paste like Arctic and apply it properly. It really makes a difference.

totally agree , that's what every source I looked to online and the helpful folks at tom's hardware forums I turn to frequently (see below) said too, grab some arctic thermal paste .. I bought the arctic mx-4 , 4 gram tube which was probably too much Smilie but very cheap, right now it's $5.40 at the time I write this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

and it also helps according to the tom's hardware guys as far as being able to remove the cpu cooler in the future (which is necessary say if you want to upgrade the CPU as the years go by) .. apparently the stock paste on the stock wraith cooler sticks a lot harder whereupon the thermal will let you twist the cpu cooler right off in the future if you need to do that provided you warm up the cpu enough beforehand (in other words running the PC long enough ) .. also strongly recommended by the tom's hardware guys, get 90 percent rubbing alcohol (very cheap at your local walmart , CVS, or what have you ) and keep that around in case you need to remove thermal paste either now or in the future.

I actually had something of a similar experience with the wraith cooler that came with my amd ryzen 5600x cooling my son's desktop build too without any apparent difficulties Smilie , also with the arctic paste... I should point out too though that it's an ultra defender 2 case (ancient case but my kids are nostalgic about it and won't let me upgrade to a bigger case Stick Out Tongue ) which while not the biggest does have .. going off memory here would prefer not to take off the side of the PC case and look at it right now Stick Out Tongue .. but I'm pretty sure it has two 120 mm fans in the front, two 120 mm fans on top, one 120 mm fan in the back and one 120 mm fan on the bottom which basically results in me being accused of paranoia by other PC builders Stick Out Tongue but which I'm guessing helps with the cooling too.

The price is tempting enough such that I did some more research into cooling but the tom's hardware forum threads I'm seeing tend to recommend liquid coolers if I'm understanding correctly (out of my budget but possibly in someone else's budgeted PC build) ...here's a linustechtips thread

https://linustechtips.com/topic/1...n-7-5800x/

although you could also try pcpartpicker.. hopefully this link works

https://pcpartpicker.com/products...ing&page=1

but if not just google search pcpartpicker, use "amd ryzen 7 5700x" as the search term , and look at the compatible cpu coolers they list.. I've been cautioned on the tom's hardware forums that just because pcpartpicker says it's compatible doesn't necessarily mean it's a wise choice but I did notice the deepcool AK400 was selling for $35 on amazon

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PCWK...e=ogi&th=1

and when I searched by the term "5700x" on the product description page it came up with three amazon reviews where the reviewers felt it did a good job cooling the 5700x CPU with temp's ranging from 55 to 70 degrees depending on which of the three reviews you're looking at.

If I do bite at this deal though .. and I'd recommend this to anyone else too, the people at tom's hardware forums are very helpful... I would post a question there first maybe in the CPU part of the forum

https://forums.tomshardware.com/forums/cpus.2/

stating you plan on buying the amd ryzen 5700x cooler and what cooler you plan to buy and see what they say as far as whether or not it will cool the 5700x properly ... I'm guessing to help you better they'd want to know exactly what PC case you have and how many case fans and what size case fans (120 mm, 140 mm) you have installed and what video/graphics card if any installed in your PC build.

I was wrong there's tom's hardware threads which suggest something other than liquid cooling

https://forums.tomshardware.com/t...x.3789991/

I know people aren't a big fan of rebates on here Stick Out Tongue ( I have the time and patience to fill in rebates and for the most part haven't had any difficulty getting my own ) but

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KYDY...e=ogi&th=1

$15 after rebates for the cooler master hyper 212 and there's one amazon review where the reviewer states it cools their 5700x just fine

However in the tom's hardware thread above there's also a recommendation for a bigger one provided you can fit it into your PC case

https://www.amazon.com/Thermalrig...Y38L4?th=1

thermalright peerless assassin 120 SE... this one is more reassuring to me because of the dual fans and two heatsinks Smilie .. $35 to $40 maybe more depending on what model you pick ... the first amazon review states it cools a ryzen 7 5700x without any difficulties

also the tom's hardware folks loved it

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...sin-120-se

pcpartpicker will help you out here, you can search the model of your PC case to confirm the CPU cooler you're looking for will fit (although unless you're building a brand new PC from scratch some good old fashioned measuring with a ruler inside the PC case is probably a good thing to do too Smilie )

also good apparently

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...10x-review

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09888C...slink=true

and I think that one's smaller so a better fit for more PC cases?

For what you're trying to build, with a 5700X, you don't need a liquid cooler. That's massive overkill and a waste of money, plus the added concern about leakage. A decent AMD or aftermarket air cooler should be fine. AMD actually makes three Wraith coolers, the Stealth, Spire and Prism, in order of cooling capacity. The Stealth would probably be ok for you but I'd get something a bit beefier just in case. You probably don't need a Prism.

Also, you have way too many fans for your build, but since you already have them, what the hell. Just make sure that air flows front to back and that no fans push air towards each other, which is bad and could potentially fry your system. Also make sure to clean out the dust several times a year. Really makes a difference.

I have an ancient full tower case that's held all my PC builds for the past 25 or so years. Just 2 case fans, one front, one back, plus the CPU and GPU fans, and the PSU fan. Can barely hear them and everything's generally pretty cool, usually no higher than the 60's Celsius. But then I don't overclock or push my system too much and clean it a couple times a year.

You'll be fine. Don't overthink it.

thank you so much Kman I really appreciate that Smilie .. and my apologies I've been sitting here typing all this stuff like a maniac before even seeing your very kind and very reassuring post Stick Out Tongue .. you're absolutely right I read that online during my paranoia about cooling research Stick Out Tongue and made sure the fans pull air from front to back as well as from the top to the bottom ... and you're absolutely right about blowing dust out of the PC's too I do that for my desktops a few times a year (you're right I know, it should be several times a year) .. I use the metro ED500 air blower which I purchased in 2015 and which I wouldn't pay the hundred plus dollars they want for it now but it's been working for me for eight years now with no problems so I'm happy with it Smilie .. apparently this is good for blowing air out of PC's too

https://www.amazon.com/XPOWER-Inflating-Detailing-Performance-Eco-Friendly/dp/B086WRHRSJ/ref=dp_fod_... [amazon.com]

long as you unplug the PC bring it outside the house (or maybe inside your garage to be safe in case it rains ) then blow the dust out

Sounds like you're on the right course here. I also have one of those PC air blowers. Extremely useful as it does double duty as a mini vacuum cleaner with its own replaceable filter, and is actually quite powerful at it. I also use it occasionally outside to blow leaves away when I'm working on my car, or in the engine bay and windshield grill to blow away debris. As a PC blower it's really powerful and much more practical than canned air. Anyway, good luck with your build and hope you enjoy it.

$15 for a hyper 212 is a great deal! And plenty for a stock 5700x if it fits your case.

If you have a secondary use for the 3800X, maybe? But I'd tend to recommend a 5700G instead of a 5700X.

What now? The 5700x is way ahead of the G unless you need integrated graphics

Replaced my 1500X with this CPU. A couple of notes... The stock cooler using stock paste was baked onto CPU, which I guess isn't surprising after 5 years. Despite being gentle and doing push and twist method, I yanked the CPU out of a locked socket. Tip: Running high CPU load to warm up the old paste before doing the replacement is supposed to help with getting the cooler off. I was lucky to not have bent any CPU pins and socket is also fine. I also wasn't familiar with how the cooler screws onto the motherboard and didn't notice that there was a backplate that fell off when I unscrewed the cooler. I figured this out after applying paste and placing cooler on CPU, which means I had to take the cooler off and reapply paste after figuring out the backplate.

The 5700G sucks. That has half the cache of the 5700x. AMD APU's suck.
it's a monolithic die that can raise the infinity fabric much higher without a separate io die. Mine outperforms a 5700x, but that took a lot of tuning. I wouldn't say it sucks if you're on b450.

Plus, you can sell your rig without getting rid of your gpu.
