I've got a slightly older version of the G14 (when they were putting 2070s in them).

LOVE it. It's been a great laptop, robust build and feels solid. It gets very hot and is loud when gaming but that's what I expect from the 200W 14" laptop. My basis for comparison is long time use of Dell latitudes and precision workstations.
intel made thunderbolt free to use for anyone that's why Apple has it in their computers. Not sure why more AMD processor laptops don't use them and even motherboards. Only company I know that does AMD motherboards that has thunderbolt more consistently is Asrock.
So I am writing on one of these as I write this comment. I did extensive research on this computer at the time before I bought it. I've owned this for 6-7 months and its a beautiful machine. It runs so well and has played every game I've thrown at it so far. Since it is a smaller machine it does run warm when gaming but I've not had any issues. The screen is beautiful and the performance for me has been incredible.

My 2 biggest gripes:

1) The battery life is meh. I expected to get a little more juice out of silent mode not playing games .

2) Keyboard RGB is a bit dull. My daughter got a Legion and the RGB on her keyboard puts this one to shame. I will say the tactile response of the keyboard is above average at least compared to my last ASUS

I bought mine when it was front page NEW at $1400. If you're getting this at $940 and the open box fates smile upon you...well you got yourself one hell of a deal.

How is it when not gaming? How's the heat and fans when just watching YouTube or browsing the web? I want to get this for mixed use with the ability to play games if I want to. Thanks

These run hot and will throttle (keyboard in particular gets toasty).
This model or these specs in particular? Because the all AMD version is a little better in regards to heat.

Your Gigabyte is much more powerful. The Asus will have much better battery life and might have brighter screen and is more portable. I'd stick with the Gigabyte unless you need a smaller system.

What capabilities does Thunderbolt have over usb-c gen 2? I occasionally dock my laptop to a monitor and keyboard.

Let me chat gpt that for you

Thunderbolt is a technology that uses the USB-C connector and provides faster speeds and more capabilities than standard USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2). Thunderbolt allows you to:

Transfer data faster: Thunderbolt 3 provides a maximum bandwidth of 40 Gbps, compared to 10 Gbps for USB-C Gen 2.

Connect multiple devices at once: Thunderbolt allows you to connect multiple peripherals, such as external hard drives and displays, to a single port on your laptop using a single cable.

DisplayPort technology: Thunderbolt allows you to connect a display to your laptop using DisplayPort technology, which supports higher resolutions and refresh rates compared to HDMI.

Power delivery: Thunderbolt supports power delivery, allowing you to charge your laptop through the same cable you use to connect it to other devices.

Overall, Thunderbolt provides a more versatile and powerful docking solution compared to USB-C Gen 2, especially if you plan to use multiple peripherals and connect to high-resolution displays.
