If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

eta prime has plenty of games benchmarked... and others have showed thermals and battery life. What more "real" reviews do you want?
Its basically a mini pc thats ultra portable with a screen attached. With 30w apu nothing is going to blow up if you are concerned. lol
Reviews from people that test it for more than a couple days, and are incentivized to give positive reviews because thats the only way they get early access to products.

Asus AM5 motherboards got tons of glowing reviews by reviewers when they launched late last year, and now everybody hates them now that they found out they are contributing to AMD CPUs burning up and failing. Similarly the 7900 XTX had positive reviews before launch by reviewers, and once units actually shipped to consumers people found out the cold plates were defective and a ton of units were overheating badly.

'its basically a mini PC with a screen attached', which means there are hundreds of things that could fail or be defective... Nintendo who has been making video game systems for decades couldn't even produce working controllers for the Switch. This is Asus' first attempt at a product like this.. You can be the beta tester of it. I will gladly wait a few weeks to see how it actually turns out.

Yes it has gyro.

For those of you signing up for bestbuy credit card, do they offer any perks? If it was 5% off every purchase like target red card, I'd consider it but if it doesn't, seems rather wasteful to sign up for another credit card just to save $70.
It has it, but can't use it according to all the reviews.

The other handhelds with gyro that have been around for almost 2 years now still don't have windows support so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Wow, that's terrible!
And disingenuous.
At max power 20-25W, you'll eek out 1.5-2 hours
At low power 8-10W, which handles all emulation and most games, you'll get a solid 4-5 hours like a steam deck. Turbo mode at 15W delivers a fairly standard 2.5 hours.

The ROG Ally is to the Steam Deck as the Game Gear was to the GameBoy.
A flash in the pan with awful battery life. I'll stick with Steam Deck, which has far better first-party and third-party better support.
Is it sweaty under gabes sack?

I have a steam deck, an ayaneo 2 (which I really like), but I felt I had to order this one for fun.
Do you always splurge like this?

Linus gave it glowing reviews. What do you think is more likely? His channel is too small so he needs to kiss Asus butt or his channel is big enough that he would likely lose more money and views by not being honest?

Microsoft needs to step in and help systems like this succeed. As a Steam Deck and PC owner I've seen my fair share of bugs but the one thing holding me back is knowing this is running off Windows. Let's be honest has anyone ever seen a handheld of this size from Microsoft pack a punch? I'm rooting for ASUS and this to hit a home run but I really wish Microsoft had more involvement.

It's a pretty aggressive price considering it has a solid 120hz screen by all accounts. That's my biggest frustration with the 6800u handhelds from last year. Some had gorgeous screens with much, much better color and brightness than the SD (Ayaneo 2). Some had 'good' screen which were significantly bigger. Some had smaller screens that did 75hz on a unique psp like form factor. I really just wanted a steam deck form factor with great analogs and a beefy feel but that adds some horsepower and a 120hz screen. This, despite its flaws, seems to mostly be that!

I never got it either ... I get why Microsoft wants to have a console to compete with Sony Playstation, but at the same time they do OWN windows which has a lot of games.

I think they're trying to market to both PC and Console (like Xbox Play Anywhere), but I don't know why they just don't go full windows and ditch the xbox.

PC's are getting smaller and smaller, and like this device you can actually run windows on it with decent performance.

If you ask me, it's time to retire xbox just like Nintendo did ... just my 2c
