If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

Did you upgrade the 64gb memory to a larger SSD?

I'm in the same boat in terms of waiting for real end user reviews, except I don't own a Deck. I was looking at the 64gb $399 model or going with the ROG Ally at $699.

I saw YouTube videos of the Ally struggling to run Returnal on lower settings, the Armory Crate being clunky, and a less than polished user experience.

If anything, the Deck showed that it takes time for a manufacturer to polish a product. However, I've heard mixed opinions on Asus too. Real world reviews are key, especially since $699 is a lot more coin on a powerful handheld gaming PC.

Surprised people are so eager to snatch these up.

Yeah, more powerful than a Steam Deck, but it seems they completely ignored battery life.

Also, with the ASUS motherboard fiasco right now... I guess some people's confidence in ASUS didn't waiver.

considering youre a grown man traveling with a giant video game device, it shouldnt be too much of an issue. you have to fully embrace being that guy.

Only up to 2hrs in gaming battery life. This will hold back the handheld severely. Will have to also pack an external battery

Looks like they removed the discount code with their card. Sucks because I signed up for a card just to use that code.

Sorry, but the promo code apr24emob25 is not eligible with the item(s) in your order.

I guess I still get 10% back in rewards, so not a complete loss I guess.

For those wondering about a hard inquiry on your credit. Do some research, it doesn't really impact your credit score much at all. It would only be an issue if you make frequent hard inquiries. A few a year is nothing.
Hard pulls cost ~5-10 points each & affect your score for at least 1 year, 2 in some cases. All disappear after 2 years. Typically only want to have 1-2 per year so you have another 1-2 at the ready in case of need for emergency use/loan/credit line.

Unfortunately, you are likely incorrect on both accounts. Linus is big enough and the Youtube algorithm works as such to where he is likely to get even MORE money shilling for companies. If Linus was honest, he would have replaced his 1st gen Deck's fan by now and note that only the first generation fans had issues. Instead, he complains non-stop about how his fan isn't quiet so therefore every Steam Deck is loud which is misleading at best. In his latest video, he makes up a silly excuse as to why his team cherry picked the benchmarks. These benchmarks just so happen to show the Ally at its best and are all 2-5 year old titles that aren't really played by anyone anymore (the best is Forza at 9k Steam players + however many play on Game Pass). Where as some of the smaller Youtubers who got review units paint a different tale in their benchmarks. Russ for instance, while not making any direct comparisons, saw FPS numbers 15 to 30% faster in his benches when only taking into account 15W TDPs or higher.

Basically, the Ally is noticeably faster, but not nearly as fast as these mega-influencers are parroting from ASUS. And yes Linus will straight face lie to you, or at best gloss over the bad parts, for views and more money. Who wouldn't in his position? Influencers are entertainers who shill things at their core. Once you are aware of that though, you can just enjoy them for their entertainment value, to which LTT are some of the better entertainers on the platform.

On a side note, but just kinda funny and sad, in an attempt to drum up FOMO, Linus says the Ally will sell out quick. But as of right now, on BestBuy's website, its still very not sold out. I was able to reserve one several hours after release. And honestly, if someone is interested, they should just reserve one and draw their own conclusions since BestBuy's return policy is pretty great (I'm not paid by ASUS to say this I swear).

It's good to have concerns and a healthy dosage of doubt but some of you guys really are stretching. I don't think I've seen a review yet that does not point out the issues with the Ally. Taken as a whole, the overwhelming response is positive. This isn't some conspiracy guys. Asus' lawyers are not handing suitcases of money to reviewers (or the equivalent of some sort). Maybe the positive reviews are because they view the device favorably. I don't understand why that can't be a possibility.

I'm sticking with my Steam Deck. Asus doesn't have the strongest support track record
