If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

Nintendo sells it's hardware 100% based on their software. They have always had lower powered hardware and can get away with it because the world wants to play zelda and mario and will buy whatever it takes to play, Nintendo has nenver marketed their games as using cutting edge tech.

Microsoft could not make that move, as one of their biggest selling points is specs. Replacing the xbox with a lower powered portable device to try and push forza, halo, and gears, would be suicide.

I have never owned Nintendo hardware in my life, and I love Xbox, but this is reality.
I'm just saying that people like portable devices. Sony tried it with PS Vita and Nintendo did it with the Switch and now there's the Steam Deck.

I think some people will give up on the 1000fps and 10000x7000px for portability, I know I did.

But there will still be people that like consoles and PC

I am also selling my Steamdeck for this. Preordered this morning. Will be happy to not have to use hacks and have a crap windows experience like I did with Steamdeck. Also Steamdeck struggles hard even with Lego skywalker games. It's fine until you get to a busy part and it's struggling at 30 fps from smooth 60 fps when not much is going on, . Takes you out very bad. Also yes I did the 4gb bios thing and it's running off internal upgraded 256gb ssd. Windows will be much nicer to have
Windows mobile anything is not great just fyi

What causes Diablo to not be playable on Steam Deck?
You can install it but its more complicated / more steps since its SteamOS/Linux and Battle.net does not have official support for Linux yet.

How upgradeable is this? Is it able to be docked and play games with keyboard? How future proof?

Very interested in upcoming or existing shooters like CS2, COD and also Hogwarts legacy.

Thx
Very upgradeable. I believe only 7 screws to remove the back panel.

For docking, there is an ROG HDMI Charger dock you could preorder for $65. Its not really a "dock" like a switch. You'll understand once you look it up. If you want a dock like in a traditional sense, the only one available is the ROG XG Mobile and thats very expensive.

The eGPU support is probably the biggest draw for me over the steam deck.
Same. While its still expensive, Im hoping that the price for those will go down. Knowing that you have an option (albeit very expensive) is a big thing for me.

This is misleading, Diablo doesn't work with steam OS by default (no battlenet for Linux afaik). Diablo certainly works on the steam deck with Windows installed, I regularly play D2R and played D4 beta on my win11 steam deck.

I love that Asus was able to keep the price down with the beefy components. I know it's more powerful than the Steam Deck and runs on Windows but I just bought the 64gb Steam Deck when it was $360 and swapped in a $40 512GB SSD.

For my use case, which is going through my backlog of classics/indie games that aren't super GPU intensive, the Steam Deck just can't be matched for the price. Eventually I will be emulating games too.

Still...very glad to see Asus respond with what looks to be a great product and I hope it sells really well. I suspect Windows will adapt the OS into something more usable in handheld form.

Steam Deck opened the floodgates and I'm super excited for the Ally even though I probably wouldn't buy something like this again until the 2nd Gen. Handheld PC Gaming is here to stay!

For me it's the price. Show me the Z1 non extreme model for 400$ and then we can start talking. For the cost of one Ally Z1 Extreme edition you can buy a Nintendo Switch Lite, a PS5 digital edition, and a years worth of PS+ Extra membership.

You don't need Windows to run Battle.net on Steam Deck. There are easy tutorials to get Battle.net running natively in SteamOS. I have done so myself and I have played the Diablo IV beta in SteamOS on the Steam Deck and it runs great.

It's good to have concerns and a healthy dosage of doubt but some of you guys really are stretching. I don't think I've seen a review yet that does not point out the issues with the Ally. Taken as a whole, the overwhelming response is positive. This isn't some conspiracy guys. Asus' lawyers are not handing suitcases of money to reviewers (or the equivalent of some sort). Maybe the positive reviews are because they view the device favorably. I don't understand why that can't be a possibility.
I honestly don't believe its stretching nor a conspiracy. It is well known that reviewers, Youtube or otherwise, lose access when they say too many bad things about products they have received early access to. Sometimes companies will be extra stupid and tell the reviewer they are dropped (see: NVIDIA and Hardware Unboxed). In this case, I don't think ASUS paid Linus, because he's pretty staunch on running a legal business and following disclosure rules about sponsorship. But rather, he has to worry about ASUS not inviting his team to the ROG lounge at CES next year for instance.

My point is basically people should just be aware of the bias. And then there's nothing wrong with any of it.

But neither of Switch Lite, PS5 can run the games that I have in my steam and other PC libraries...

it says IPS in the listing, so no. However it's 95% accurate with very good color performance (the deck has about 75%). The variable refresh rate is the big deal here for 120hz, meaning even if the game dips frames, it should retain smoothness.
