If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

I'm very risk adverse about opening up a Deck for a SSD swap out. Working with microSD cards by itself still works well?
Yes. microSD cards work just fine. Suggest to plan ahead so only one large capacity card is needed. Otherwise switching cards will work too. Valve already confirmed hot swapping SD cards is fine, and I do that all the time.

5% everyday rewards, flexible financing, occasional 10% off coupons. I signed up for a new card and got the 10% off coupon plus the 10% rewards for new cards.

Thanks for confirming. The frugal person in me says to go with the $399 Deck and sticking with a MicroSDs or going with a large SSD swap out.

However, for me, the peace of mind would be a $529 256gb SSD Deck, but it puts it $70 less than the Z1 Ally. The 512gb Deck is only $70 less than the Z1 Extreme Ally too.

Makes it so hard to get anything but the $399 Deck until the Ally really has good real world reviews or gets cleaned up with all the bugs and clunkiness.

in return, no double extended warranty? that alone could cost hundred of dollars.

I went with the 512gb because I didn't want to tinker around on the insides. Also the anti glare helps if you play in bright areas. Still can't see in direct sun but it's better than nothing. Others report third party anti glare isn't as good or even interfering with the touchscreen.

Ah nice, how have you enjoyed it? Are you going for the Ally Z1 Extreme too?

Very easy. Can you use a screwdriver?

I love the no-interest financing. I'm not poor, but I'm not rich. It really helps.

On this rog Ally, I got 12 months of no interest, even though I'll have it paid off well before then.

This one really isn't too bad. I would suggest a small, precision screwdriver with a magnetized tip - it helps to have the screw firmly on the end of the screwdriver and you can drop it right down into the hole. I think there are only 4 for the back case, three for the shield and one for the SSD itself. I didn't bother disconnecting the battery although that's probably best practice. I'm risk adverse to dealing with those little board connectors.

If I keep the Ally, I'll have to go back into my deck to harvest my 1TB out of there, so I'll have the fun of doing it again.

Yes, but what about having to seal the interior components up and also in the case of a RMA for a repair, I'd have to swap in the original 64gb eMMC storage? Seems like a hassle, no?

If it was engineered to be user upgradable via something like MXM, I'd probably be okay with the pricing but the idea of paying $800+ for a used Rx 6850M module on ebay is pretty hard to justify
Does not make sense, so what was the reason you didn't buy a Steamdeck, cause someone else already made one? Where is hardware like this in a handheld at this price? This processor is not in anything currently, because it was created for portable gaming.
