You can just get a Minisforum mini PC for $579 (now $506 - see below). Comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe 4.0 SSD, Triple 4K display out, a ton of USB ports, including a USB4 port. It even comes with a Windows 11 Pro license.

Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Same price at Costco so a slightly better deal if you have membership since they extend the warranty for an extra year.

8GB of RAM is going to choke basic web browsing with multiple tabs and one more open application. Phones ship with 12GB+ nowadays and multitasking there is much more rare than on a desktop with a large display
Do you have this actual computer? Have you used it at all? I've been using mine (same specs) since it first came out. Having 30+ tabs open in Chrome, Outlook, and multiple excel spreadsheets open, my Mac Mini M2 barely goes over 7GB. While that is a little too close to the max 8GB before it starts spilling over to the page file, it is still more than enough for me.

I've been in IT for 25 years and while Windows machines don't play nice with 8GB, this is a completely new architecture in terms of hardware and software. I was pretty sure that I would regret my purchase due to all the naysayers - and was ready to return the machine if the 8GB proved to be too constricting, but it never has - at least my in own use case.

Well! I read these comments and it turns out that some got Cooking (Tim Cook) and some with open sourcing (PC). And I have just laugh.

Another silly comment without any real experience using such a machine.
My Macbook Air catches on fire every time I load AOL instant messenger because it only has 8GB of RAM.

Oh, wait, I've never had an issue with it.

Just for fun I'm carrying a 5 year old Dell 7390 Latitude laptop with 8GB of ram I got from Dell Refurb.

It's pegging close to 8GB but runs ok since I am just running chrome, telegram and discord most of the time while on the go.

can't beat this thing for $120 total cost! It is a superb machine for something to keep in the trunk next to my Macbook Air.

yep, great deals every week. don't think i would keep it in the trunk of a car as it may be tooooo hot.

i upgraded my Latitude with more ram and duplicated the C drive as a backup, cheap SSD's seem to work fine.

sure with the Fruit Company had great upgrade able laptops like Dell, a lot of them have soldered in ram and SSD....deal breaker me thinks. groan.

To be fair, many flagships out there do have more than 8gb of memory (12GB most of the time on these flagships, 16GB I only remember my S21 Ultra having). But from their "my bad" reply, they probably meant storage I guess 😛

This configuration works great for a basic browsing and word/pp/excel processing setup.

If you plan on do heavy video editing, gaming, or other RAM-heavy applications, this IS NOT the target configuration for your needs.
SO in other words, the perfect computer for 95% of the population.

Yah, I kind of like Dell 7200 2-in-1 as it is fully detachable. It's just around $280 shipped. It's expensive considering the 7390 or 7400 series but it's smaller and more portable.

Funny I never liked using an iPad even with a keyboard as I used my Pro Max phone most of the time and iPad is too limited for me as I would just prefer a laptop

Now with 7200 2-in-1 I can do a lot and it's under 1.87lbs (0.8 less than M2 Air) so I may make this my casual carry if I can live with it. I won't even bring the keyboard, the onscreen keyboard with Windows 11 OS is plenty enough for an hour of use here and there.

I like a laptop because I do need to use Chrome with various extensions so only a macos or windows will work as ipad/iphone chrome does not support extensions.

battery life sucks at just 3 hours for some reason even at 100% charged (85% original battery capacity).

as for heat, it's fine in the heat. When I use it it will be cooled down pretty quick in AC somewhere anyway. I don't think computers cares to be in the heat these days since internals can get 140 degrees easily.

Not gonna lie I've been browsing refurb and giving people some ideas for Kid's gifts as $100-$200 for a quad core 1080p computer is just great. They may think it's "old" to buy but they'll love it when they realize it's powerful enough for their mindcraft , discord and homework needs.

Two options:
1 buy a base M1 mini.
2 buy an upgraded M2 mini with 512MB storage.

Why? The M2 base has only one chip of storage unless you upgrade whereas the M1 base has two chips of storage. The result is the storage on the base M2 is half the speed of the base M1. This is important to your user experience. Especially in the 8GB ram versions where some of your storage will likely be used as additional ram depending on how you use your machine.

Carrying 8TB of data on a laptop with you on the go seems like a bad idea.

And "thin and light" would suggest not powerful enough on x86 chips that's can't possibly process all that data efficiently.

Even fastest Apple computers is extremely unlikely to process that much data on the go.

8TB is 180 hours of 4k footage. I'm sure they won't edit 177 hours of 4k footage on the "thin" and light laptop.

Not to mention data lost risk of 8TB of data.
For me 8 tb is 8 hours of 8k Raw video, which is why I got a laptop with 8tb storage built in.

I found this hard to believe. Would you mind posting a screenshot of your RAM usage? Is the memory pressure green or yellow? I had a base M1 Air that I returned. It started using swap memory with ~20 Chrome tabs open and wrote 60-70GB to SSD per day doing basic tasks like web browsing. While 8GB RAM provides satisfactory performance, it comes at the expense of SSD longevity.

One thing you can do is move to Edge. It runs off Chromium, but MS has done a good job of making it more efficient than Chrome. It also uses the same extensions, so the experience is super familiar.
