Both the 980 Pro and 990 Pro had a bugged firmware that was killing them within a few months. They were incorrectly reading the wear on the drives. After a certain amount of wear, the drives become permanently read-only with no way to fix it. Even though the drives had 95%+ life left in them, they were reading as about to die and rendered read-only. That since has been fixed. As long as you update the firmware before that happens, they're fine. I'd be incredibly surprised if there are any drives left with this old firmware (at least directly from Samsung), as I bought one around December and it had a newer firmware than the defective version. The fixed firmware for the 990 Pro wasn't released until a couple months after the 980 Pro fix, so people were advising to avoid the 990 Pro until it was fixed. The 990 Pro firmware was fixed in February.
That was a waste of nearly an hour.

I had it in my cart with the price and as I went to checkout, it reverted to the higher price.

Then I tried multiple ways, no change. Then I went into a chat with VIJAY and he sent me an invalid code to supposedly fix it - nope.

Then we went back and forth with multiple screenshots in support that I was not receiving the Military discount and he then started to claim our tax rates were the issue and that they are almost three time what they actually are....

Finally, I just gave up.

But I'll probably try again later after I've cooled down
Worked for me. I don't even know why I ordered one. Prices should go even lower.

5000MB/s write isn't gold standard that's mid gen 4 speeds for $119.99 i would get P44 PRO is on par with 990 Pro according to tomshardware review.

In addition, Samsung is known to be hot. SN850X are really good choices too.

Samsung 980 Pro is near the middle of the Gen 4 pack in speed. However, it is the best in power management test, so it will use less power and run cooler. Users won't need to worry about heatsink or speed throttling, so it is better for laptops. In addition, it supports AES in HW, so it is better for works which require drive encryption. https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...2/applause.gif

WD 850x is one the the fastest SSDs recommended by many review websites. However, it may run hotter, so please buy the models which include a heatsink or add a heatsink yourself. The heatsink will not fit in most of the laptops, so it is better for desktop gaming PCs or external gaming console expansions. https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...ies2/peace.gif
Samsung is know to be hot in many test video I saw. Their controller cannot be classified as cool category. In general, for whatever Gen 4 flash drive, heat sink is very important for longevity though they claimed to be able to operate under 95C but it is better to keep them under 70C in peak. I don't think it is wise to use PCIE Gen4 NVME flash in a laptop without heat sink.

Does one still have to buy the oem 981 version to get the hardware encryption to work (allowing the bios to set the HD password) with a Lenovo X1 carbon?

$116 for me (+tax) and pick up in an hour at my local Best Buy (awesome option - it's only 5 minutes away).
Perfect timing too - I was about to do a new re-install on my PC!
Pretty cool can pickup at best buy. Best buy online it is $129.99 so this saves me some $

Not much more for the version with a heatsink:
https://www.samsung.com/us/comput...-v8p2t0cw/

But it's not much savings compared to amazon, even with the discount, so not really compelling.

First responders does not require verification. All other programs do. If you are getting blocked you need to make sure you remove all your cookies. They will stay so, if you put in one program and change it still makes you verify with the program. Make sure all your cookies are deleted.

The heatsink is pretty big, it more than doubles the width of the same drive without it. So make sure, whatever you plan to use it in, has space for it or it won't fit.
