O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

Hope the world boycotts this product such that nvidia makes a modern version of it
Bigger issue with boycotts, is that they tell nVidia to drop it entirely.

Only Nvidia Shield Pro supports lossless, which makes it the better option over Apple TV for audiophiles and anyone who uses the Shield pro as a plex server for true lossless playback of film audio tracks.
This is my issue right now. I bought Shield Pro about 2 years ago and returned it, and Ii'm still facing the same dilema that I can't find a better alternative media player that has all the same codec support without a ton of really hard to adjust settings. Currently using an Xbox Series X for watching through Kodi + Plex, however I have to go into a secret menu to adjust the HDR settings.

No other player supports Dolby Vision / HDR + TrueHD / DTS / Lossless for my home theatre system. Might just have to bite the bullet again.

You said server, but didn't you mean client? Isn't it the client that needs to be able to decode and play lossless and atmos, etc, from the plex server (a PC in my case).

do they though? I still need to run mine on 1080p because of the HDMI CEC error when I run it in 4k and that's been happening for over a year.
That would drive me crazy. I recently replaced a 25 ft 4k HDMI cable with 40+ ft 8k active HDMI fiber cable, which cleared up a lot of issues. Always a good idea to check each piece of the puzzle.

Nvidia really needs to release an update or drop the price of these. Imo there's no way these are worth more than the newest apple tv.
In the AV enthusiast space, the Nvidia Shield TV Pro arguably remains the "best" media device. It's NOT perfect but generally can handle 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, loseless audio including Dolby Atmos, and has a really good AI Upscaling feature taking 720p/1080p content and nicely crisps them up.

Real life example: my wife and I binged through "This Is Us" in 720p on Hulu. We have a 4K OLED, Denon receiver, etc. The AI upscale was so good I didn't even realize it was 720p until we were nearly done with the series.

The biggest flaw to the Nvidia Shield TV Pro, IMO, is how it struggles with Framerate Matching. Lots of other devices do as well including Apple TV, Roku, Fire Stick, etc. but one would think Nvidia would have this down. Yes, I know about the beta Framerate Matching function but it doesn't always work; it can actually crash certain DRM apps (like Youtube TV). There are also apps you can install to help mitigate this but the overall sentiment is that it isn't turnkey.

The Shield Pro supports lossless from your movie files (i.e. DTS-HD Master and Dolby TrueHD from MKV files for instance) and HD/Master music streams from Tidal Hi-Fi and Amazon Music HD. Other streamers don't support lossless unfortunately. As far as Plex, the Shield Pro can actually support both being a Plex Server or a client if your Plex server is on your PC or NAS. So in my case, I was going to setup a NAS after ripping my entire library of blurays. However, it is less expensive to get 1 or 2 large external (8tb-16tb) hard drives, as the Shield Pro has 2 USB inputs. Keep in mind, the Shield Pro only struggles as a Plex Server for external access in case you're sharing with family & friends (processor likely bottleneck for transcoding my lossless audio in my MKVs)...but I don't recommend external sharing as logistics isn't worth the hassle...then use a PC for best value. However, if you want one standalone Plex Server, you can have the Shield Pro and just 2 hard drives attached for the best & most convenient home media library in the smallest and powerful footprint.

Btw, you have to turn on the Plex Server the first time you setup Plex on the Shield Pro. The option to check off comes up during setup. Also, external hard drives have to be setup by the Shield Pro, which puts a specific Nvidia Shield Pro folder. Then you can transfer files from your PC over your home network directly into media folders in that specific folder on the hard drives attached to the Shield Pro.

I can't recommend anyone buying a shield if they like to watch Hulu at all, unless you plan on having another box just for Hulu. Google Shield p-dev320. Mine hasnt been able to play anything on Hulu in approximately a year and it seems like neither or Nvidia or Hulu are going to do anything about it.

Definitely buy it now as this is the cheapest I've seen in ages. I did the same as you. About 2 years ago, I wanted to test Tidal hi-fi and Amazon HD music for lossless music streaming, and it was the only streamer device option to support it. I returned it at the time as I wasn't listening to music enough and wasn't sure what my final all in one setup would be. Then I bought the Shield Pro about a month ago for 199 only because I decided to rip my blurays for ultimate convenience of lounging & browsing over having to find & load discs.

Hulu works fine on my Shield Pro. Try factory resetting and check for firmware updates.

Right. I'm aware it can be both a server and a client, but if you want the lossless audio like you said, including things like atmos, from any plex server, you'll need the shield as a client. The client is the critical component, not the server, correct?

I tried a new 8k hdmi cable from the shield to the reciever. Didn't work. It might just not play nice with my reciever but it worked fine before the v9 update

I'm not a fan of the remote shape on this, is there a good remote that anyone can recommend? Thanks
Dude, neither am I. I've had it for months and constantly have to look at it to determine what to press. Sounds willy but it's annoying haha. Can you even use a 3rd party remote?

Yeap exactly this is the one for a dedicated home theater system or a premium sound bar setup.

i think the remote is excellent....well weighted and comfortable in hand, over lighter and smaller remotes for other streamers. Plus, when you raise the Shield Pro remote, it always lights up the buttons, where other remotes don't....another great feature not found in other streamers.
