O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

"They should be $xyz by now" - ya, because the highly paid finance bros at Nvidia don't know how to price for profit maximization. Lol. I don't care if you think Elton John is old and should charge less for his concerts. Supply/demand simply doesn't agree with you. Nvidia would most certainly lower the price if there was a need to in order to drive demand. Clearly people are paying the high price they ask because they don't want to give their home network AIDS by using some cheap, no name, off-brand junk Chinese box. People out here buying unstable, cheap parts havin spyware machines because they're "cheap". Lol. Way to infect your whhhoooooolllleee network. Stop correlating price with age. Price is a function of demand. Period. And demand is still high relative to the amount of supply. There have been shortages of these in the last year or 2. Partly due to supply chain issues and partly because they have an outstanding reputation.

I also have the latest Apple TV, which is great from a hardware perspective. But the usability is trash. Apple's remote is overly simple so sometimes the button with the TV shape is to move back a screen and sometimes it's to go back to the main TV menu. What? It's incredibly not intuitive to navigate. The extra specs are wholly unnecessary for a simply streaming box and Apple's closed system is a PITA for folks who wanna run a Kodi setup or a personal PLEX server in the house. I can't download IPTV apps for legal IPTV services I subscribe to (pro tip: all streaming live content is IPTV at the fundamental level) and you can't side load to try cool mods which fit your use case. You can do all that with Nvidia. It's the single best streaming device on the market when you consider price against quality of workmanship, risk reduced parts and programming because of who makes it and knowing Nvidia actually has a legit license to use Android, so we can rest assure we will get updates, warranty, knowing Nvidia will be there tomorrow for support, etc.

What's this YT adfree sideloaded app that you refer to?
It's called youtube premium... LOL

Only one that will reliably provide that function I can guarantee you... Every other app it's a constant cat and mouse game and just not worth it...

I'm aa cheap as the next guy but I don't find the money spent on premium to be at all a bad investment especially when you take into account the entire music streaming service it comes with and even more so when you split the cost between 5 people like I do!

Family plan ends up costing each of us like 3 bucks and change I just give my "family member" $45 every Christmas and we all keep streaming along happily and ad free.

Do any of these have AI upscaling or True HD audio codec?
No AI upscaling, but they do support TrueHD Atmos. Support for DTS-X is also expected to arrive in a future update.

i think the remove is excellent....well weighted and comfortable in hand, over lighter and smaller remotes for other streamers. Plus, when you raise the Shield Pro remote, it always lights up the buttons, where other remotes don't....another great feature not found in other streamers.
I think the form factor is great. I think the button layout is somehow confusing.

I have one of these and love it. NVIDIA really does need to update it as the supported version of HDMI is starting to show its age. As more people are getting TVs with 4k @ 120Hz, the shield is stuck at 4k @ 60Hz

Also, GeForce Now is starting to support 4k @ 120Hz which won't work on the Shield TV.

If you have a 4k @ 60Hz TV and like to use Crunchyroll and HIDIVE the AI upscaling NVIDIA uses works really well with Anime as they mainly stream in 1080p.

I don't really understand all the bashing. Do you guys know some cheaper alternatives to the Shield Pro that can run Plex server? If so, please share.

What new tech doesn't it support? It supports 4k resolution, all of the latest video codecs, and lossless audio. Other streamers that are 'current' can't even support lossless audio...so new tech is actually 'old tech' as the Shield Pro still beats all of the competition.
It doesn't support all of the latest video codecs. It can't support FEL DV which is increasingly popular.

There are a number of current streamers that support lossless audio passthrough. There is so much outdated misinformation being posted by all the Shield owners.
Yeah it's insanely prevalent. The Shield is not the de facto streaming box anymore, not after the recent crop of devices like the ATV, Fire Sticks, various Android TVs, etc.

My Epson 5050UB can't handle DV anyways. Most ppl with HT projector setups can't. So DV is never a deal breaker. The ability to have an easy PlexServer in use and connect to an external HD are what is key for me. I would've thought there would be a new version at this point.. I'm still bitter after that last chaotic update, which broke my PMS. Going back to an older version was not a walk in the park.
I get that but my entire point was about DV and the latest video codecs... since that's what most people are citing the Shield's greatest strength, which it does not support.

Any device with fairly recent Intel integrated graphics? That's what most would recommend as a cheap streaming box, vs the Shield. Intel Quicksync is one of the most performant hardware transcoders.

Where are you seeing PC's with recent Intel iGPU at less than $170? The cost of CPU with recent Intel iGPU, MB, RAM, HD, PSU, case, remote, etc. is not going to be less than $170. Not to mention a dedicated PC is running 5x-10x the electricity as the Shield Pro. Please list some viable alternatives with prices less than $170, thanks.

Do a search for Intel N100 Mini PC. They are low powered full computers and have 2 to 3 times the performance of the Shield for around the same price.

There is the additional cost of a Plex Pass for hardware transcoding which is free on the Shield Pro.
