O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

Have had one for a while and, while it's still going strong, recently re-realized how terrible the wifi is on these things. Used to have it hard wired at my old house and it worked pretty solid and have since moved. Now Shield is about 15 feet away from router and struggles streaming 4k with constant buffers both locally and remote over wifi (Plex direct play, Netflix, Apple TV, etc). Debating running ethernet to my TV location, but it might be easier/better to just get a new streaming device. Pretty disappointed given how much these things cost compared to competition.

It is overpriced now that it's filled with adware and getting old. The AI upscaling is really the main reason to get it over a chromecast or if you are going to play emulated games it is also good.

Pros:
AI upscaling, very good for animation video
2x USB ports
Still fast processor

Cons:
Adware
Old and not updated often
Still has software bugs have to reboot occasionally

I have 5 of these and they work well with cinemaHD. Even my 8 year old knows which links to pick, we basically get every tv show/movie we want. I've had lots of other boxes but these seem to be the ones that generally work and don't crash a lot.

I have a single regular Nvidia shield and I wouldn't recommend that one. I have issues with it freezing.
my 25 dollar google tv dongle works great w cinema too. what does this do for TV (not games) that the google can't?

You're from the future and your TV displays 12 bit color @ 4K? Thats amazing! (ATM 2 studios make FEL content, well see what the future holds).

Glad the cube works for you, fantastic. Great that we have choices, maybe in the future it will be worth it for me. For now, no way.
No, but the OLEDs and other TVs can accept a 12 bit signal. That's irrelevant though; it's moreso that FEL allows for 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. So the transfers are marginally cleaner and its better for futureproofing.

Don't need a NAS:
$170 on sale - Shield Pro with Plex Server running on it.
$130 on sale Costco - Seagate 8TB External HD (265 MKV movies with lossless audio at 25-40GB avg size) hook up to Shield Pro. Add another drive if needed...Shield pro has 2 USBs.
$130 - External Asus Bluray Libredrive enabled drive to rip.
Around $330 to have an excellent lossless home streamer and still less expensive than both a NAS and Kaleidescape.
How do you rip the blue ray connected to the shield?

Saw on the forums Homatics / Dune has lots of bugs. Hard pass. Let us know when all the kinks are worked out, and maybe I'll try one.

This is a polarizing product.
I had the og 2015 Shield TV till this year, the newer ones use almost the same specs, very minor tweaks.
I loved the support for all these years, can't say the gamepads were great though.
This is not a bad product but something that has shown it's justified age a bit and which should be way cheaper now. Heck the intro price in 2015 was US$199.99.
Wish Nvidia update this, maybe it'll be after the Switch Pro or whatever Nintendo releases that uses Nvidia tech.

Old tech yes. But still my workhorse streaming PLEX media from attached external hard drive.

If anyone has a better recommendation to direct steam PLEX to my TV for cheap and not taking up too much space in the cabinet below my TV, I'm all ears. But for now, I'm a fan and have had good success.

Worth noting: HULU app has been frustrating on this, but I'm able to stream/cast from my phone to Shield easily without issues.
I was having issues with Hulu on the Shield Pro. Sounds a lot like you. Turns out it was my ad blocker causing problems with Hulu authentication. Whitelisted those servers and Hulu straightened right out.

Sometimes devices plugged into the USB ports can cause interference with the WiFi as they are so close together. If you aren't using the USB ports, you can also shut them off in the menus. Otherwise, try swapping ports for your devices or use a USB extender to get it further away.

I get very good WiFi speeds on my Shield Pro since following this advice.

What new tech doesn't it support? It supports 4k resolution, all of the latest video codecs, and lossless audio. Other streamers that are 'current' can't even support lossless audio...so new tech is actually 'old tech' as the Shield Pro still beats all of the competition.
Shield does not do YouTube in HDR, does it? Pretty lame if you ask me.
