The 18tb red pros were $249.99 recently, same 7200 rpm but 5 year warranty. Doesn't make much sense shucking drives anymore these days.

Great price that beats last Black Friday price by 30 bucks. Of note, for those who have plex servers or the like, You can disable this drive's automatic sleep function (or led) via the WD drive util (https://support-en.wd.com/app/ans...s#subject7 ) note that only easystores can have their sleep timer disabled the other versions that you can buy from retailers, including direct from WD doesn't allow disabling of the sleep function.)

Pro tip: These are not very stable so buy a longer cable and keep these on or near the floor.

I've done this for more years than I can remember (15+) to prevent F-ups and no issues so far...

Laying it flat would be safer - I put a rubber drink coaster under it too for traction and anti-vibration

Recently I backed up a machine I had been running for years with the plans of wiping the system and starting fresh. Well after backing up years of data I rebuilt the OS. I had my desk in the standing position so when I walked by my foot caught the cable and the drive fell 5' to the hardwood floor. I was only a few minutes from copying the data back to the new system and I lost everything. The drive is clicking like crazy. System won't even boot with the drive slaved. Re-doing my entire backup policy now.

Exact same experience. This thing probably fell a foot and a half. These things are DENSE. The thud it made was not a happy sound.

Just picked up two of the 14 TB for $199 ($14.28/tb) on Monday for purposes of shucking them. Haven't opened them up yet, so I'm tempted to take them back and get these instead at $13.89/tb.

Yes a pretty simple reason.

Let's say you have a 5-bay NAS that you populate with 5 x 18TB disks for a total of $1250.

Now to achieve that same amount of storage you'll need 7 x 14TB disks for a total of $1330... Uh Oh! It's actually more expensive to buy more drives, not to mention that it cost more to run more disks at tens of dollars per year in most US states, and hundreds of dollars more to expand your NAS chassis shelf count.

Here's a better question: Any real reason why anyone shopping for price per capacity wouldn't get larger disks when the $/TB is within spitting distance?

I have 2 of the 8TB which have been running with zero issues for 5yrs now.. they are my storage for TV and Movies for plex.. both sit behind my TV hooked up to a i5-6500 optiplex with 8gb of ram...

Hmmmm I may order one of these to create a backup up of both those drives 🤔

Correct. All the EasyStores for the past several years have been actually 7200RPM, and exhibit the seek times of a 7200RPM drive. I'm not sure why WD continues to label them as 5400RPM except maybe to give themselves the option of arbitrarily changing these to use 5400RPM drives without notice based on supply.

in for 1.. waited too long for a decent non-enterprise, non-pro nas,non-seagate. This will be shucked immediately, timer disabled and used as an internal drive along with my other two shucked WD Easystore drives..
