Preemptive NOT compatible with PS5.
Wow, these deals keep getting better. This is still one of the better drives on the market even though its Gen 3. If you need an OS drive or extra space for games on your PC, you won't notice a difference between Gen 3 v Gen 4 speeds.

The main exception is if you're a video editor and are copying large files all day...that's where the faster Gen 4 drives may make a difference.
WIth this drive for $75, and the Intel 670p 2TB (also with DRAM) for $70, I can't understand why anyone is buying all those sketchy also-ran drives in that front page deal from the other day.

Man I just picked it up for $5 more the other day. Oh well!

Make sure if you have an AMEX check and see if you can stack the one point or $5 deal to get 10%+ off. I think other credit cards offer similar. I got mine for $72 down from the $79.99+ taxes

are you referring to the Crucial FP deal? I thought Crucial was a reptable and reliable brand?

Google up Crucial's sneaky way of switching controllers for the SSD. In the tech space they ADATA'd their own SSD line without informing the public in order to save cost.

Some manufacturers are becoming in nefarious in building good products in the beginning, then without telling the regular joe/jane they demote their standards to save money. (Ehem nvidia)

Kind of crazy Apple charges over 10 times this for their 2 TB upgrade on their laptops.

They are, just these have dram so usage and speed wise, they are much better in performance compared to anything without dram even if apple made them.
If referring to the FP deal for Crucial P5 $30, those do come with DRAM. I bought one as a burner drive, all my downloads will default there and plan to use it until it dies. Lol

I believe they were referring to this post: https://slickdeals.net/f/16844555-2tb-nvme-ssd-internal-drives-lexar-nm790-gen4-89-teamgroup-mp33-gen-3-66-more-free-shipping?src=frontpage
Most of these are lower-end, budget drives and not really a deal imo.

The Crucial FP deal was for P5 Plus and that is still a very good, high-end drive.

In fairness to Crucial, component swapping is unfortunately common place nowadays. As you mentioned, companies such as ADATA, Kingston, Team, SP, and probably others are all guilty of this. Hell, even Samsung swapped the controller on this exact drive a couple years ago.

No, more like Timetec/Lexar/Team Group/Adata/etc.

This is tough question to answer because how hot it gets may vary greatly from laptop to laptop.

I would recommend taking your laptop apart (or look for a video online) and check to see if there's any preinstalled heat spreaders or airflow to the ssd. If there's nothing, you may need to use a thin heat spreader like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YC1HTFR/. Or if the laptop is metal, you may be able use a thick thermal pad instead (so backplate makes contact with the ssd).

Heat sinks only help if there's airflow. If the m.2 compartment isn't actively cooled by the main laptop fan, heatsinks won't help much. So the "heat spreader OR airflow" should be heat spreader AND airflow. Or just airflow IMHO.

I'm not familiar with laptop cooling design. If you're using a laptop from 4 years ago, they may include a m.2 slot but not anticipate these hot drives? There seems to be huge variation between how hot NVMe drives get.

I can only speak to my experiences, but I've found those heat spreaders generally do work in laptops. Even if they don't have direct airflow, the exhaust fans should create negative pressure inside the case...which pull in fresh air through all the cracks and crevasses. But I agree, it may not work for all devices.

I was close to buying this drive, but decided to wait for the 980 pro or something else. The 970 series seems to run super hot. I'm seeing people report replacing their 970 with a 980 pro and getting much lower temps on the SSD with the same case and slot.

Seems like you can't use the 970 in a laptop without good air flow.
these 970 evos have the same chip as the 980 pro..Samsung changed their chip during the shortage.
they all run hot. Add a heat sink if you want

Thanks. Already opened my lg gram, it has a pm991 ssd installed. Going to check specs but it doesn't have a heatsink on it.
