Was on the same boat. Got the M2 one. Keyboard, screen , camera , fingerprint reader is better.
+ Longer software macOS support.
For M1 - slightly better SSD write speeds (didn't matter to me) and price.

I was debating between both the m1 and m2

I've read the ssd is a bit faster on the m1.

I ended up going with the m2 since someone mentioned you might get a few more years of updates with it

Also, m2 has MagSafe charging

They are not the same. Point me to cheapest non-Apple computer with iMessage, FaceTime and AirDrop, just to name a few features.
